OH, I have a couple more questions. Some say they can tell even what the species of fish is on their flashers just by watching their display- how can you tell? AND, size of fish is another thing ppl can tell by the display- does a bigger fish give off a brighter signal?

As for the size of fish question, a bigger fish will show up red on a flaher, a little smaller fish will show up as orange and small fish and bait fish will be green. If you see a red mark, move your bait just above them and jig slightly then move it just a bit up, sometimes they will chase and grab. Good luck.

Marcum LX5 has a little different color set up.

Faint/weak signal is Yellow/Amber

Medium signal is Green

Strong signal is Red

For myself often times the biggest fish is Yellow signal as they are further away from the sonar cone. I couldn't tell if it's a 30 inch Pike vs a 12 inch crappie. It may also look like they are lower but infact they'r level with the lure. You have to think angle in triangle, straight down is the shortest distance from transucer to lure/fish. When they come closer to lure, it looks like they rise to hit, which often is. If the fish moves slowly like most panfish do. The signal goes from weak to medium and strong signal return. Sometimes a huge red line is nothing but a bunch of panfish together.
