Why an auger bogs down

What are some of the top reasons an auger will bog down when drilling holes?

Many times it's cuz the auger isn't fully broken in. If it's broken in you could have a bad chiper blade and it's bogging right as it's breaking through. Dirty carb, slightly plugged fuel line, bad gas, way to rich with the oil could all be reasons.

Mine will bog down occasionally when I don't let it warm up for a couple of minutes when the temps are down there.

My lazer-mag sometime bogs down if I haven't opened the vent on the gas cap in awhile. Just need to open it momentarily and she purrs again.

All of the above. One other possiblility but not likely at this time of year is that when the ice is not real crisp it can be more difficult to drill. This can become more of an issue in later ice when it starts to soften more.

Bad diaphragm is a main reason!

The simple reason is its not getting enough fuel. A few of the other posters have touched on reasons for this - vent gas cap closed, bad diaphragm, dirty carb.

Another reason which we're learning a little more about is the carb jets and how these carbs are jetted to meet emissions standards. Sounds like the new Strikemasters are really experiencing this problem. The carbs are jetted too lean for the wintry weather we use our augers in.
