Abu Garcia Revo SX

midwesthunter

Question

I am in the market for a new baitcaster for the upcoming season. I want something that I can use for trolling cranks for walleye or casting spinners/smaller cranks for smallies. Does anyone have any epxerience with the Revo SX? Should i be concerned about line capacity at all? Right now I am using an Ambassadeur C3 and it works, but I would like to upgrade to something a little smoother and can cast small shad raps.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Ive played with the sx at work mostly pitching bass jigs and it was smooth. Line capacity shouldnt be a huge issue. What pound test were you going to run? The one problem you might run into is casting small shad raps. They are light and light lures dont always work well with baitcasters. You may run into casting distance or backlash problems. The revos come in two gear ratios 6:1 and a faster 7:1. The slower 6:1 ration would better suit someone casting cranks and actually many fisherman prefer gear ratios even slower, 5:1 or sometimes less.

I have a Shimano Curado D200, and it is great for anything down to worms with no weight or very light weight - like 1/16th oz plus hook. I do have it on a nice medium light rod, using 12# power pro. I also use C3 and C4 and C5 reels, and like them alot. BUT, you will really like the low profile reels if you haven't used them yet. Very comfy.

I am actually going to try a REVO SX or STX if I can get a deal on one. But you can't go wrong with Curado either, but a bit more $$.

I use it mostly for smallies on a small clear lake up north, but also on WBL for largemouth or snakes \:\)

I received a revo sx (left handed model) for fathers day last year and I can throw a 1/8 ounce jig and plastic (not far, maybe 18 yards) but I have a medium light rod. 1/4 ounce and up, no problem. OUTSTANDING reel. If I was going to buy another baitcasting reel, it would be another REVO SX. I have used mine to troll for walleyes and northerns, casting for bass, and I also used it stream fishing in small streams with a 5'6" pistol grip casting rod. That reel was made for pistol grips, especially that 5'6" one. Lots of fun.......

I messed around with a Shimano Curado D at Gander Mountain tonight. I think this may be the reel for me. There is also a $50 mail in rebate for this reel which is definately a bonus.

Does anyone have any good or bad things to say about this reel?

Thanks

I love my Curado. One thing, the braking system is different than other "point and shoot" baitcasters. They have these little "brake weights" that you need to put on, and they are adjustable. It is very easy to do, but very important to set them where you want them. The first time I used mine, I did not have any of them on, and I could not figure out why I got backlash EVERY cast. No kidding, and it was not my first rodeo with a baitcaster ;\)

But once I put them on, holy cow, smoooooooth and long casts with what seems like no chance for a backlash. FWIW, I bought NIB from an online friend who is a big reel geek. He purged the bearings of all grease, and I added my own oil to the bearings. This is what the bass guys do, and the competitive casters, etc. due to the grease the manuafactures put on is thicker and meant to make sure the bearing have lubrication over the course of the reels life, since most people never maintain or oil their bearing. So now I must make sure to oil bearings at least once a year. But holy cow, can you tell a different between a stock bearing and one that has been totally cleaned then oiled.

So, not saying you have to do this with Curados, cause you don't (my stepson has one stock andit a great). But many with some of the higher end reels will "tweak" them to make them even better. The Curado, while high end in my book, is basically like the lower end of the true "high end" reels. Heads and shoulders above most baitcasters that most of us use.

Get it and enjoy it! \:\) Also, All American Outdoors is a sponsor of this site, and they have good prices. If the rebate will work with them, you cound get a Curado really darn cheap.
