Mine works just fine for me. The bottom zoom is very easy to use and perfect for me since I am pretty much unable to locate suspended fish. Have never had trouble working alongside anyone else except for the big fishing tournaments when there are thousands of beams bouncing all over the place.

Only downfall I have seen so far is not as sensitive in deeper water but great for shallow water. less then 20 works excellent.

Or you could just get her a camera, works for my wife..

My fiance got me the VX-1 for Christmas and you can't go wrong. It is a great unit and a great price. There is also a rebate still available on them right now.

As far as the power goes the watts don't make as much differance as the way the unit interpits the signal. Take for instance the FL-8 might need a suppression cable, the other Vexilar units have a low power mode. The Aqua Vu Showdown/VPG has proven you can take a unit and completely change its performance just by making software upgrades.

I think it will be interesting to see what happens with the flasher market next year. The VX-1 offers features similar to a high end Vexilar at a price lower then their entry model.

It seems that some of the companies that were around when ice fishing really took off are relying too much on their reputation rather then performance and value. Its a ever changing market and todays consumers are more concerned about inovation rather then what company did 15 years ago.

I agree that the lower end Marcums can do the same things as a higher up Vex, but the Vex. is a much better unit then the lower model Marcums. But I wouldnt trade my fl-18 for anything less then the top of the line lx-5! So if you were comparing the 2 top of the line models, the Marcum cost more. There isnt any better technology out there, then these 2 flashers. You could include the new grey scale units, but I would trust the flasher before any of them. Just my .002.

In my opinion, you cant go wrong with either! I couldnt go back to not fishing without one!

Right now the VX-1 is the best bang for your buck. Also if you look around hard enough, you can find an LX3 or LX5 soft case that it will fit perfectly in wink.gif Much nicer than the generic ones.

I have a vex, a friend has a lx3 marcum. I can fish next to other vex users w/ minimal interference issues. With the vex next to the lx3 it is more of a struggle to get and keep a clear screen on the flasher. If you already have a vex I would strongly think about this before purchase. I do think that the vx1 is a good deal for the money, but may not be the best option in the long run.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
