Pipestone Lake Report

Recommended Posts

Pipestone produced some nice trout today, mostly 4-8# fish on glow tubes in 25-55 fow. It was a great day on the lake and there were only 6 other people fishing on the lake. Pretty much had 25 miles of water to ourselves. Did anyone else have any luck with the lakers?

The main trail is healed over pretty good, there is still slush in alot of spots off the trail. It doesn't seem to be to deep though. The temps are supposed to be above freezing for the weekend, so we will see what that does. You will be able to make it to where you fish, I put the trail right beside where you drill your holes. They are driving trucks out on Off lake now. The crappie bite has been pretty decent in the mornings. Are you going to fish Panorama when you're up?

Went after the lakers for a few hours this afternoon on Pipestone Lake. We managed to pull a few threw the ice on Yum white tubes w/ silver flakes in them. The fish were most active @ 35' in 50-55fow. Could have been better if we wouldn't have missed a few hits. The largest was 33 1/2".

Fishing was good today. Everyone in our group caught their limits of lake trout and we released quite a few fish. Most fish were in the 3-6# range and were caught in 45 - 60 fow and jigging at 25-30 fow. Most fish were caught on glow in the dark Venom tubes. Some were caught on pearl tubes.

I fished the Manitou stretch last weekend. We did not travel far, went through a few slush spots, but as mentioned it's not too deep with some of it freezing up. I measured 10" total. 5" white ice and 5" clear ice. We managed 5 trout in 28-38 FOW. We had fish around us most of the time. On Sunday when we left, it rained hard for an hour...this could settle the snow a bit. Colds temps now will really help.

Sounds like a little slower fishing. The conditions are improving , but we just got about 4" of snow yesterday. I haven't fished over that way yet, been spending most of my fishing time on Pipestone. The fishing has been really good overall this season. The other day, I took a group of friends up and stayed overnight with them. We started fishing at 11:00 and had landed 17 lakers by evening. Today we started at 9:30 and when I headed down the lake at 3:00 we had landed 18 lakers, I am sure they landed more after I left. If we would have landed all the ones that got off at the ice, the numbers would have been alot better. Most of our best fishing was in 65 - 85 fow and jigging around the 30' mark with glow tubes and 3/8 leads. We pulled some out of shallower water, but not near as many. The fish averaged 4- 10#.

The group just made it back and reported that fishing was good again yesterday. The total fish count for the 3 days fishing was 51 trout landed. The largest being around the 12-14# mark. The key was to keep moving and pick up the active fish. The white tubes and Venom glow tubes were the best baits. They reported good overall travel conditions for the ride out.

The group this weekend came out from Pipestone with another good report. The trout were biting well in 40-65 fow. Some of the better fishing was close to the cabin and in Schistose Lake. The weather was very nice for fishing and the conditions are excellent. We still have a few dates open for Feb.

We are primarily into the laker fishing in the winter. Once you get them in your blood, walleye and crappie aren't as fun. We have remote outpost cabins that we use for the trout and there are some smaller lakes nearby that offer some decent walleye fishing like Straw lake which is a short ride from the cabin. Pipestone and Yoke lake have some bigger walleyes, but they are harder to come by in the winter. The Nestor Falls area has a good variety of species, but there are ALOT of people fishing in that area as well. The crowds of people aren't for me. I think you may enjoy fishing our area and it does offer some walleye fishing as well. Call or email if you want to discuss it more details, I am curious about your hunts as well.

Cedarnarrowsguy,

I would imagine travel is great now. We were up just before the cold snap on Crow, but we also hit up dogfly and vane. Travel was great and there was only a few spots of shallow slush.

I can't wait to get back up there for some more lakers though...

Travel is excellent right now. Everything has healed up and I haven't seen or heard of anyone having any trouble. If you ever want to stay Dogfly, let us know as we rent our outpost on Dogfly out in the winter. If you would like more specifics, shoot me an email and I would be happy to go over everything with you.
