Extended deer hunting in Zone 101

Dec 31st thru Jan 13th

Anybody going to be walking thru the woods braving the elements trying for the elusive chronic wasting diseased deer? I'm thinking about it. My dad and I might make one more weekend of it. CWD just adds a little extra flavor to the meat! Kinda like natures way of marinading grin.gif

And I believe the 6 deer left in zone 101 have already been claimed.

Serious questions. How far were they able to whack down the herd during the early & regular seasons? How committed are the local landowners to the late hunt?

In other words, do the guys think the DNR is inviting the State to come "take their deer" or are they in support of hitting the reset button on the whole herd?

I think there's going to be a lot of road hunters, especially with the cold. Yes, we have a lot of state land in this zone, but with this snow, It's going to be tough going. The forest roads are snowmobile trails now.

The locals that I've talked to that plan to hunt, all have heated stands. That's probably what I'll do, if I hunt at all. The deer population is pretty sparse in my area.

Some of the guys I've talked to feel that the dnr is just going to eradicate the deer population with sharpshooters if they have to, why not let the hunters take what they can first.

Heated Stands??? come on, it's northern MN deer hunting! I can't wait to finish my finals and get back up north to settle into deer camp one more time. I think it's great that the DNR decided to give the hunters a chance to help out in their efforts this year. There were a lot of unhappy locals last year when they had no part or say in trying to stop the spread of this disease. As far as the deer population right now, it's gotten very spotty from what I could tell during the first firearm season. All i care about though, is that where i plan to hunt, there's still some good numbers...haha wink.gif

Absoloutely a heated stand. The days of freezing my rear end off are over. At my camp, the young bucks are back in the cabin warming up, while I sit in comfort hunting all day. I wish I would've built it earlier.

And I do appreciate the chance to hunt these deer before the snipers take over. I just am a bit frustrated over the number of deer I've seen this fall, with all the seat time I've put in.

December 29 - January 13. The beauty of it for me is that I can use the licenses I didn't fill during rifle season. That's the part I was really surprised about, and I commend the DNR for not trying to make an extra buck on this. Someone in the DNR is a very good politician wink.gif

hmmm, you look familiar..... lol!

What's up Gaviidae_Esq?

I'm in 101, just barely but I'm in it. (our camp)

I'll be up there shooting the 105 & 11 deer that walk across the road into 101... see that way I won't get the tooberkyoolossis.... smile.gif

I think land owners more in the central 101 area like the skime area probably don't care for the project all that much but I guess I'm glad that the DNR is utilizing deer hunters to aid in there plans rather than just jumping straight back into the sharp shooter mode.

Dates for the hunt are December 29th-January 13th i believe. I know it starts the 29th for sure. Crappie Killer, which area do you usually hunt in? We hunt just east of grygla, and we didn't notice any difference in numbers during the rifle season. I think the area that has taken the worst hit is around skime and wannaska. Where the sharp shooters and COUGARS??? have been going at the population.

That herd that got hit with TB 3 miles east of grygla...That's exactly the area i hunt. Don't remind me of the sharpshooters going there this winter, because i know it's inevitable. From growing up in wannaska, i can't remember a time driving through randen ridge and not seeing at least 10 deer in the ditch until last spring. Wow, I'm lucky to see 1 deer driving through there now. How did the regular season go in that area?? are the numbers that low??

I seen alot more deer in 101 this year than any other year I've been there. They were very skidish and just crusing thru the woods, difficult to get a clean shot off. But, I was concentrating more on poker this year, so I wasn't at the top of my game. My dad shot a decent 8 pt. though in 101. looked like a healthy buck to me.
