Garage Heater

Ok fellow fmer's...I decided to heat my gargae this year. I Love IT!! But no I have a delimma...I went with the ventless infared propane unit 30,000BTU with a 30lb tank. Didn't want to stick a ton of money into it, but now that it's been heated, I thoroughly enjoy working out there. My problem is I'm going through a tank of propane every 4 days at 22$ a shot. I was going to plumb in natural gas to my heater but was wondering if I would be better off buying a forced air unit also. Try to keep the temp at 45-50. Is it worth the money for the forced air???

Thanks

If your shop is sealed tight, your getting Carbon Monoxide in your system. However, most people dont want to spend a few bucks to do it right. Most companies will professionally install a gargage heater for under $2000. I hope you at least have a CO alarm out there.

I just installed one in my garage on Saturday. In all fairness I had it easier than some as there was a heater in there so I had an exhaust vent already installed. I would pull the trigger and get one that exhausts to the outdoors. A propane non vented will not only fill the garage with Carbon Monoxide you will get a lot of humidity from it as well. I got a 75K BTU heater on sale for $499.00. That sale is over now though but the 60K BTU heaters run that price everyday. Lots of places have 45K BTU heaters at about $400.00 or less. Had the garage at 55 yesterday as I was out there working all day. Sure beats the heck out of not having a heater let me tell ya. I keep it set at 40 when I am not out there working, that will melt most of the dump off of mama's truck overnight and keep the floor from freezing up. Most have power exhaust so you can go out the wall rather than up through the roof. Hope that helps, or maybe answers a question or two. Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

Had a customer do this a few years back was a home we had just built for him with an attached garage. HUGE mistake when it got to -10 or colder he was calling his garage door would not go up. It was freezing to the concrete, water was running of the walls and doors, to much moisture put in the air from the heater. They tried running fans countinously helped but not much. He has since installed a small electric heater and no more problems.

I have an old house furnace in my garage. Works great. I have gas line run to garage underground though. Adding the vent through roof is easy and pretty cheap. I can keep it at 38 degrees, or pump it to 75 if I want smile.gif

Neighbors either have same setup as me, or the hanging gas garage furnaces. If you go that route, get the 75k and don't look back. The extra money is worth it.

If you don't want to do that right away, I have one of the 220 electric hanging heaters in my cabin and it works great. A bit noisy, buy easy and safe.

good luck! I have couches and easy chairs and fridge and pizza oven and TV in my garage, and it is like a little clubhouse all winter long smile.gif

I bought a radiant tube heater...it's hanging but waiting on the plumber to finish the job...will let you know how it works...I've heard that it is more efficient than forced air...I think I paid around 600 for the unit...I had already stubbed a gas line out there so no cost there...might want to check out that type of heater...no CO and a fresh air intake....

Duckslayer is right on the money!! This is the only way to go in my book. Keep it at 40, and crank up the thermo when you are working out there. I've had a 60,000 BTU Reznor in my garage for 5 years now, would never give it up.
