How do you like your otter den?

I wasn't really in the market for a new fishhouse but I was checking out the otters on their HSOforum and found the otter den package(house, sled, seat, cover) for $288+ tax and shipping...I wasn't sure if i'd like the smaller house, but i'm sick of pulling my voyager all over the ice at 150 lbs plus auger and gear. Anyway's I just wanted to see what some of you den owners thought of the set up.

at 6'3" and a bit over 350#i would have to say that the only thing i dont like about it is i cant stand up in it. but if i could it would take more to heat it. i love it. i can get it in and out of the truck. i have had a very custome seat for it. and spend a large amount of time in it. it has been around. and out and about on quite of non-home lake excersions. ... paul

I just picked up the same house on the same deal. I have it set up in my garage waiting to go out. So far, although I have not used it yet for fishing, I love it. It is a really great and well built fish house. Its a perfect size for one person, its a little bit longer than the fish trap pro, and the sled is a little bigger. You can set it up really nice. I can easily fit everything in it that I need for one person.

It is a great roomy shack for one person, I just cant wait to get it out on the ice.

Go for it though, its a great deal for the $.

Buy them quick if you like them. I believe they are on sale at Otter's HSOforum because they are being discontinued. The new Otter Catalog shows the ice house lineup as Cottage, Cabin, Lodge, Resort, Village. The Den is missing.

I have a Den and absolutely love it. Looks like I'm going to have to pick up a new skin for it before they are all gone.

I put in the order on friday night, wasn't sure how many they had and I didn't want to let that deal go...It was one of my better "impulse buys"...I went from not even thinking about getting a new fish house, to checking out the otters, and then to shutting my eyes and hitting that "purchase" button and i'm glad I did. Do they usually get these things sent out pretty quickly? And does it have the snap on tarp?

Thanks,

Zach

I love my Otter Den and am dissapointed to see them discontinued. Here in PA we have to pull our sleds because the majority of the lakes do not allow atvs, sleds and etc and of course the Den is the smallest and lightest. I too am going to order a spare canvas.

My dad has a Trap Pro and it is a nice house but my Den is built better, has more room and is mostly made in the US.

You'll like your Den and the closeout price is a killer deal. The trim lock system otter uses to attach the tent is great but I have had problems with mine unhooking. I got some stainless 10-24 bolts and fender washers and bolted the plastic trim to the sled, it doesn't come off anymore.

I just got the Den this summer, and they are much bigger than the Fish Trap Pro. I found a new one with runners on Craigs on one of those early summer 90+ degree days and get this...$150!!! It's going to be my main portable, and my FT Guide will be the "social" shack.

Haaad that's a heck of a deal there...I never take advantage of those deals because at that time all i'm thinking about is open water and boat accessories...I need to look into my future a little more.

My den was sitting at my front door yesterday, I put in the order friday night at 9 pm and it got here Tuesday afternoon well before the weekend. I called Joe with otter customer service on Monday to see about how long the shipping process would take, he told me they were out of the purple tarps so I got a green one instead, he then said it should be at my door by friday and it was here the next day. Thanks Joe for the great service.

May want to check with Thorne Brothers to see if they have any travel covers. I bought my tent/poles, travel cover, seat set, otter rod holder, hyfax kit and utility box from them the other year. They may have some excess inventory.

The new cover I bought is Green, a little more manly than the purple cover I have now. smirk.gif

If you plan on getting the hyfax kit I would put it on before you assemble the house, its much easier. Ask me how I know. crazy.gif

They're runners of hard(er) plastic that you put on the bottom of your sled so that you don't wear out the softer plastic that the tub is molded out of.

If you pull your shelter with an ATV or snowmobile, it is highly recommended that you put these on as well.

The cover is part of the packagae, and I am hoping that Otter comes through any time now and delivers the product I have already paid for.

Oops, forgot the package included a cover.

I love my Otter Den! I can load/unload quite easily by myself from a truck bed. It's a very nice sized house for going solo. Like the fact that it comes with a sled that is tough and is deep enough to make some modifications to if you choose to go that route.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
