Your year, in a nutshell

Had a great year! Had to study for the bar exam this summer, so I decided I may as well be on the shores of a few musky lakes while doing it! Quit my job in the middle of May, fished Mille Lacs for walleyes 8 days between walleye and musky opener. Caught 7 fish between 25" and 27".

The rest of the summer was dedicated to muskies, with a Lake Michigan salmon trip and a Lake Erie smallie trip mixed in. Fished approximately 60 days this summer.

Caught 17 muskies, including a 40", 43", 48", 50", and 50.5". Also caught my biggest smallie on Erie, 6# 3oz and my biggest salmon, approximately 15 pounds on Lake Michigan.

All in all a great year fishing. Oh, and I passed the bar and got my first job.

Now if only I hadn't messed up on that monster buck...what a year '07 could have been!

I had a pretty good year. It would have been a great year if I could have landed all the fish I hooked, but I'm sure many of you could say the same thing. Ended up with 16 fish over 30 inches. Not sure about the total if I counted the really little fish under 30 inches. It was a tough go for me through the summer months, I found that muskies weren't using the same pattern as previous years on several bodies of water I fish. So it took a while for me to break the mold and start something new. The year was highlighted by a trip to Minaki. 8 fishermen, 3.5 days and 24 muskies. My boat had 10. A couple 47's about an hour apart were the biggest in my boat. I also put a couple nice 46's in the boat thanks to a metro lake.

So overall, my numbers were down a bit, but average size was up. Already getting pumped for next year and the trials and tribulations it has to bring.

all right. I put in about 20 days the most I ever fished since I started chasing skis about 2 yrs ago...im more for walleyes lol. but it was fairly action packed. Saw several fish in my one week on big V of all sizes and missed a few strikes and spooked a couple fish. Couple night trips out therre after work as well. Caught my third muskie ever and my first on topwater!! HEART ATTACK!!!!! it wasnt like the movies either i saw barley a ripple behind my cisco kid topper and before I realized what it was the lure was sucked under and I rammed trhe rod home hard. wasnt much of a fight from a 38 incher.. Last cast this season an honest 50" plus SKi skyrocketed outta the water near my bucktail. I htought it was just a jump until moments later the rod jolted out of my hands it was on for about 30 seconds...what a season!!! grin.gif

All in all our best year, though there were some slow spots. Caught our first ever June fish, then went dry all of July and early August, but of course only able to fish weekends and that can be tough. Rediscovered the night bite, and Cowgirls and DC10's were the ticket. Late August was good to us, though I never landed a fish on topwater, which is disappointing because that's always so fun and usually pays off for me. Both my son and I had personal bests - mine a 52 that had to be 40 lbs and his a 51 that had to be upper 30's. Both had 24+ girth with a tape. Did some water releases, mainly because I was alone (including the 52). Will try to do more of that even when we can take photos. We put 24 fish in the boat, including a 53 for my buddy, a 52 for me, and a 51, 51, 49.5 for the kid. He also outfished me 11 to 9, and I couldn't be happier. Still haven't caught a fish on Leech, but broke through on a couple other lakes. Also had several hookups and landed some fish on the figure 8, which was a first also. Can't wait 'till the shows, some new baits, and next season. Maybe Canada, and definitely more night fishing. If we're lucky, a new boat!

2007 was a great year. Put the most fish in my boat of any season thus far. Helped numerous clients to catch their first musky and/or their new personal best, which was very rewarding. Broke my own new PB on two consecutive mornings, the first one by myself, and the second with one of my very best friends. It was a lot of fun having him to share it with. Scouted some new turf up north. Definitely learned some new things about Mille Lacs. A major highlight was boating a 55 inch beast up on Lake Bemidji. Also met many new musky fishermen, and made some great contacts in the musky fishing industry. But it wasn't all fun and games.....got beat up plenty of times too (and left scratching my head???), but in spite of it, can still never seem to get enough of this musky fishing thing. Very much looking forward to 2008!
