how do flashers work?

I'm not very scientific, but I have a general idea...I think! Basically, your transducer sends out a sound (you can hear/feel the clicks on the bottom of your transducer). The sound wave goes down from your transducer in a cone shape. Anything that the sound wave hits bounces back up and is transmitted back to your transducer. The depth reading is just how long it takes for the sound to come back. There is a lot of internal computer stuff I don't understand. Somnewhere there has to be a "brain box" with the calculation built in to transfer length of time to a depth reading on the screen. It also has to show weak signals as green and strong ones as red on a Vexilar, and I'm not sure how that works either.

I guess I mostly explained how sonar works, and not necessarily flashers. There are probably a lot smarter people on here than can give you a better answer.

Its called the Doppler principle. As GillMan said a signal is sent out and the faster it returns calibrates the depth, the deeper the water the slower the return. The internal guts then calibrate speed of returned signal vs depth calibration. Its the same principle as police radar. How they compute the different color, green orange and red is not something I understand, but it sure works. they are an amazing tool. Bill

im hoping to get the fl-8se with the genz pack this year. its the best seller so it must work well, for being the cheapest. it doesnt have as fancy of stuff, but it will definitely show you bottom structure, fish and your bait if large enough. i cant wait to see my jig falling on the screen then getting the tap when i see it get to the fish colors.

I have had my FL8-SLT for quite a few years now, probably at least 6 years. I'm sure the newer FL 18's and 12's have some great features, but I really have not wanted to upgrade yet. I think my FL8 still does a great job, and I fish A LOT and am serious about it. Don't think you are selling yourself short with the FL8, it's a great unit.

Also, I have the original black plastic case that came with mine. Not a single crack or chip in it yet. I use my equipment, but it's an expenzive electronic and should be treated with a little care.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
