Fish Trap Yukon and Jeep Cherokee Loredo

Anyone have any problems fitting one of these into a new Jeep Cherokee? I plan on picking one up tonight and want to make sure first that it will fit. I took some measurements and it looked as though it would be a snug fit, but it would work. Any info would be appreciated.

I almost bought a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo last winter... My buddy who owns a Yukon was with me on that car shopping expedition...

We were sitting their giving it the Pro's and Con's... And one of the con's was "There's no way we can get the Yukon and all the other gear in the back." We started thinking up ways to use the luggage rack on top...

In the end I didn't buy it and instead bought a Ford F-150,Supercrew and now I'm the mobile fishing command center.

When I bought my Trailblazer the guy at the lot was a little confused at my measuring the inside of the truck with the seats folded down. I told him that I was liking the truck to that point and the deciding factor would be if my Frabill Ranger XLT would fit in the back without issue. He asked me if I was kidding and I responded, no. If my portable won't fit, I will not buy the truck, simple as that.

Luckily it measured good and the house fits in just fine.

My poor wife just sat there shaking her head...

I had a similar experience when shopping for my truck... Salesman just don't get it... I'm not buying the truck because I love spending a bunch of money in gas... If it can't do the work I need it to do when I'm out playing in the great outdoors, it means it doesn't get bought.

Hey Chuckster, I had a 91 Cherokee Laredo and the FT Guide. I don't think the Cherokee has changed much in size or style inside. My FT Guide barely fit because of both the length and width. It actually fit like a glove with no room for movement, so I would doubt that the Yukon will fit.

It tells you a little about who I am, but I brought my portable fishhouse along with me when I test drove new vehicles last summer. You should have see the looks on some of the faces when I pulled out my portable to see if it would fit!

I actually feel the same way about not buying a vehicle that cant do the things you want it to. Unfortunately, I bought this vehicle after college at a pretty good price instead of buying a truck.

I have fit a Frabill XL speed shak that I have recently sold in the back, and it was snug but I made it work. That was 72 inches long I believe.

Tip, the dimensions of the Yukon are 64 x 37 x 23. I measured the back of my Jeep, and I will have at least 4 or 5 inches to spare as far as length, and quite a few inches to spare on width. Im not sure about a blazers specs, but I would think that it would be similar to the jeep, unless its a two door. Let me know what you find out and I will do the same, hopefully it isnt too late.

Hey guys, your other option for carrying a portable fish house is to buy a cargo carrier for your hitch receiver, and then tie your portable. Kind of similar to how some guys carry their portables with 4-wheelers, although you may want to put it on it's side. Never tried this, but I've seen it done before.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
