Plastic Sheeting in Fish House Construction

duck2

Question

I am finishing off the walls of my permanent house and am about to put on the styro insulation between the studs. Am I asking for trouble if I use clear plastic sheeting ( instead of Tyvek) to wrap the walls? I know that Tyvek or a similar house wrap would be the recommended way to go, but given budgetary contraints and the availability of a free source of plastic sheeting, I would like to use it to cut down on any possible drafts. Is there a big problem with using a non permeable surface like clear plastic instead of a breathable product?

Thanks

Thanks so much for the quick replies and for the supplied link to the informative internet item on vapor barriers. Now its time to head over to that dumpster I passed this morning that had the plastic sheeting heaped in it.

i agree that there is not a problem with the plastic inside. the idea is to keep moisture from entering the wall cavities and becoming trapped. once that happens you have a rot and mold issue. be sure to seal up the seams and joints to get the most benefit. as long as your house has windows that can open or some other means of ventilation, water vapor will be able to escape. good luck!
