Catmendo
Lake Winnipeg's reputation revolves around the walleye, BIG walleye. The popularity of sport fishing the "BIG" lake by the masses has only recently come into play. Up until three years ago, very few anglers new anything about this massive lake. Now it seems everyone and his dog is focusing their efforts out there and if the truth be told, who can blame them! As for "pike" in the "BIG" lake, let's just say that it could be honestly considered as a monster pike factory just waiting to be discovered. Throughout the hard water season, there are occasion's where incidental catches of large pike are report by anglers while fishing for walleye at that time. Such was case three years ago when Gatorhunter's son Sergio hooked into and landed a forty three inch beauty while fishing for walleye. I would suggest that if an honest and sustained effort was put forth regarding pike angling on LW, the results would be very, very impressive! In March, pike will begin staging along the shorelines of the lake, just waiting for when the time is right to move into the rivers to begin their spawning ritual....this I know this from first hand experience! Catmendo
Sergio/Serge.....whatever, he's my buddies son (your's too TC) and from time to time he is referred to by both names. After all, look at "ALL" the names we use when we're referring to you TC!Back on the subject of LW and pike. During a walleye session last March, Eso and I were literally beat up by whatever species of fish that were hanging near a pressure ridge that afternoon. In total, he hooked up six different times and I hooked up once during a period of approximately one hours. Neither one of us could do anything to control those fish, they were simply to large for the tackle we were using at the time. I'll never forget the power I felt at the other end of my fishing rod. In all, we never landed a single fish. In each case and after a fairly lengthy battle, every fish was eventually lost by throwing the hook, we never experienced one single bite off. Over many years, I have hooked countless big fish of many different species. I have lost many fish by having them throw the hook and I have also experienced my share of pike bite off's as well. You win some and you.....At the end of day we will never know for sure what those fish were. All I know is Lake Winnipeg (the BIG lake) has the ability to produce huge fish and also huge numbers of them! I only wish more anglers would set up a dead for pike while they are on the lake. My feelings are that if more angling effort were put towards the pike, the results would be impressive.

Catmendo
I have no doubt that the results would be very impressive if more guys would spend some effort targeting pike in the lake.Every spring, Netley/Libau Marsh and it's massive maze of lakes, creeks and channels becomes a spawning hot bed for those toothy critters. Once again I base that from first hand knowledge that I have experienced over many years. During late March/early April, I have personally witnessed scores of pike carrying out their spawning rituals. It's quite a sight to see!!! Having said that, small wonder that there's so many large pike crusing the South end of the lake, waiting for when the time is right to move into the marsh and begin spawning.A thought just came to mind....since TC becomes so quickly bored fishing for walleye, maybe we can convince him to start focusing on all those pike out there......hint, hint!!!
