RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME!

What a great Thanksgiving weekend! Got out with the muzzleloaders, chased roosters, and got on the ice!!

Right time and place didn't fare so well, But the weather and comeraderie were second to none!

Yesterday found myself, brother, cousin, and friend hunting for the elusive trophy whitetail. I saw 0, my cousin saw 0, my brother saw 2 150 plus bucks, no shots, and my friend saw a couple does. We met up at a wildlife area around 11:00 and decided to grab the dogs and chase some of the roosters we had seen that morning. Got back to wildlife to find four pickups chasing them ahead of us, oh well we just went to another favorite area. about four miles into the hunt, one rooster, Bingo! then working a willow edge along the cattails up pops "the heartford buck"! Good 160 inch plus deer! just loped away, not running and not much attention to us or our dogs. 20 yards and we were pheasant hunting! Oh well that's what keeps us coming back. Sunday morning put us on stands again with nothing to watch but roosters again. We decided to hit the area we jumped the buck looking for the million to one chance this was his bedding area and he would be back. What we found there was a little disheartening. The bed we jumped him in yesterday was very bloody, looked to me remnants of a gut shot. Where he came out there was blood about four feet high on the branches and grass which would have put the wound about the top of his belly. We put four hours into searching for him, but lost the blood about 200 yards from where we last saw him. Sad note for such a magnificent animal. We cut our losses around 4:00 and headed to a shallow lake to check the ice. 3 inches. Good enough for me! Right place right time!! three of us bagged 5 nice walleyes, and they sure look good in hot oil!

Man I love this time of the year, Oh yeah forgot to mention the field hunt for mallards on Thanksgiving morning, Right time right place. 11 big greenheads!! I'll be living this weekend over and over for a long time!
