April Walleyes

Most of you are gearing up for the hard water season. I noticed that walleye season is closed for the spring. If any of you want to expreince another world class fishery (I noticed you fellas have it pretty good) come to the Detroit River starting in late March or April. Officials estimate that 10 million lake Erie eyes travel to the DR to spawn every year. This is the time the FLW comes to town. Are season is open all year and produces all year. I wanted to invite any of you to check out for yourself. When you come let me know either me or another dedicated fisherman will put you on the fish.

I've never fished the Detroit River but have gone a little farther east and fished Lake Erie's Western Basin and the Bass Islands area in mid April a couple different times. It is really a fun trip. We might do it again this year, we've been talking about it but don't have it planned yet. It's a great way to get things started and a fun trip to look forward too!

IF you decide to come I'll help you find a quick limit of eyes before you start bassin for the day. Trolling spoons in the spring on Erie is the ticket for eyes with the ocasional steelhead or king.

Hey there RJT welcome to FM. I've been out your way a bit.. Have a brother that lives in Grand Haven. It's been awhile but 98 thru 02 I'd make a couple few trips to MC to fish each year.

Been in that Trenton Channel area during early spring a few times and upstream a bit.. Fished as early as 3/13 and 17. Also have boated over to Brest Bay I think it was? Launched at Lake Erie metro park, that rings a bell to me maybe?

Crazy good fishing on your lake in early June a coupla times too. Did the lure/spoon thing with tots and scorpion spoons. Also used 'the weapon' as the rig was called!

Been on Saginaw a bit also, have'nt caught a fish there under about 5 pounds in 8 days on the water trolling out there! I really like Sag and the boat ride to the E side of the Charities.

Again welcome to our HSOforum man. Saw the pics post.. don't let some folks get under your skin eh. I've fished your pond and eaters are a bit different out there!!! Hang around we're a good bunch.

I don't go too stir crazy spring as on these border waters as we can fish till mid April with a 3+ week break then till Walleye opener filled with Sturgeon and Pike to keep us occupied!! Rainy River will break open for a bit of boat fishing late March or very early April usually. Going into ice mode now for four months as yesterday was my last river trip for the fall.. Brrrr!

Ya kinda not good, my brother went thru the big D and he really does'nt fish like he used to?? I was even a member of the WMWC for a couple years to do tourneys out there and now I don't even go.. Shame!

Regards, enjoy the winter season....fiskyknut

fiskynut - sounds like you been around and know the area pretty good. If you fish lake saint clair and the st clair river youve covered the whole system. We catch saginaw bay walleyes in the st. clair river and eries eyes in the detroit river during the spring runs. Sturgeon are a blast. Heres one I caught this spring on 8 lb fireline.

Lake St Clair is on my things to do list! Would like to do that Muskie speed trolling thing one time anyhow. Seen it I think as we did boat upstream to the far N end of the city one day. Different kinda scenery for me for sure there between Detroit and Windsor!! I gots to do the Bay de Nocs eventually as well.

I've fished Burt/Mullet once for a couple days also, and another I forget the name of about 1\2 way up the LP.. It's apparently a big one for icefishing..'tipup town' or something in the winter maybe?

Done the Salmonoids on the Gold Coast side here and there, and also that nite time Muskegon lake Walleye thing.

Great state for the angler ya got. I'm glad I know a few folks out thatta way who kinda showed me some where's, when's and how's that's for sure!

How on earth do you handle that traffic though!!!

I grew up in the UP, just west of Marquette. I know what its like with little to no traffic.

This traffic SUCKS! I've had traffic slow me down from getting to the boat launch by two hours before.

Yes I agree that traffic is sumtin! You all drive pretty darn fast though!!

Nice in the UP.. Driven thru that way a coupla times from NW MN to Grand Haven. Little longer but it's nice to avoid Chicago thats for sure! Some stretches of road there with long runs between gas stations!
