Airjer - Advice!!

dtp

Question

97 Ford Expedition- 5.4 l 170,000 miles- will not come out of 4WD low.

Checked all fuses I can relate to it, cleaned/greased the two pin connectors on transfer case (2 pin and 16 pin)- no major vacuum leak (have good brakes). Truck shifts fine in 4WD low - 1-2-D -OD so do not think it is a major problem - just can't drive on pavement!

Starting to believe it is the 4 position dash switch - was sticky before - now loose and easy (after cleaning of course). Does not respond when switching position in neutral - always says 4WD - LOW. No clunk - nothing. Actually didn't even light up on initial start this a.m. - left it in low when landscaping last night. New selector switch is $60 - but no info on how to trouble shoot. Can get one tomoorow if I order by 3:00 today. Looks easy enough to replace. Heading SD pheasant hunting Wednesday sunrise for holiday weekend. Need to fix or drive the Crown Vic. Any advice? Do these things go out? Any other connection I missed?

If I remember correctly there is an electric motor on the backside of the transfer case tap the can of the motor with a Ford diagnostic tool (hammer) grin.gif . The key word being tap! Likely it will move back into a position that is more desirable. If this is the case you will need to replace the motor.

Sorry, since I put the boat away I haven't looked in here a whole lot. you can always find me here equipment-expert information !

Whacked it last night - problem fixed. First attempt in a.m. with light tap (wood dowel) did not work - had to use 1/2" breaker bar - to reach in the tight spot - whacked hard enough to kill a salmon.

Everything cleaned and greased ready for winter.

Thanks
