I run a lot of Tica Cetus SS500's on my longer rods. If going to a heavier rod like the Professional Plus then I'll use a 750 or 1500 series Shimano of some sort. But for my longer panfish and perch rods I'm going with a Cetus mainly for weight and control... balances very nicely... the Cardinal 300 is nice too...

I have added several Cardinal 300's to my collection,as well.Started with a couple of Cardinal 100's last year that worked fine, but decided to go the 300 route.Ticas are nice for what I have seen of them, but I pulled the trigger on the Abu Garcias.

Was throwing rocks on the Ice last night. laugh.gif When we got to the parents place there wasn't a lick of Ice so we're definately making some fast! If we get a layer of Ice over the whole lake it's all over unless there's wind with the 45degree highs.

What line are you going to put on the Cardinal 300U? Are you going to start a thread called "Line for Abu Garcia Cardinal 300U"? tongue.gif

Talk to you later,

Corey Bechtold

Fireline Crystal is awesome. Some people think it freezes to the spool too easily but I'm not casting when I Ice fish so it's easy to just peel it off. The zero memory, sensitivity and hook setting power makes it a favorite of mine. I still lime Micro Ice in the 3lb for a lot of situations but for some reason I have noticed that Crystal is making it's way on to more of my reels.

Good luck,

Since I've got two of the outside 32" rods; panfish and perch; I've decided to use my other small reels. I'm using my sustains 1000's; prior model and new model. Might be overkill at the moment but, I'm just not looking to buy more reels. Between the old sustain FD's and the new one's FE's the handle on the new one's a tad bit shorter. The handles of the new one has a thread pattern that tightens as you reel and loosens if you un-reel, similar to Shakespeare/Pfluegers. Makes for a quicker handle breakdown, but not as fast as Abu's push button latch release. Looking forward to giving these two combo's a try...I can tell that fish handling with a load will be my tug-of-war winning side.

Just a little dissapointed the new Shimano's didn't utilize that one feature that made the bail spring wire attached to the inside of the rotor arms like in the older Shimano's. They really should bring that back, it makes the bail wire smaller, for even less wobble.

    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
