Smokeless powder compaired to Regular

Recommended Posts

For most people, smokeless powder IS regular powder. If you are talking about a muzzleloader then you would be asking about black powder or black powder substitutes such as Pyrodex, Triple Seven or American Pioneer. The two biggest advantages of smokeless powder is very little fouling and no corrosive sulfer. Currently the only muzzleloader on the market that can be safely used with smokeless powder is made by Savage.

During the 2006 muzzleloading deer season the Minnesota legislature banned the use of smokelss powder but that law was repealed for this season.

The only muzzleloader on the market today that can be safely used with a charge of smokelss powder are made by savage. All others are only for Black powder or an approved substitute.

Smokeless powder is available in quite a few different burn rates and can generate substantially more presure than Black powder. The Savage that uses smokeless powder is built and tested for smokeless powder, it uses a small charge of a specific powder that this gun can safely shoot. Do not try to use this charge in any other gun.

The advantage of the savage using smokeless powder is that you will not have to worry about cleaning the rifle immiediatly after each time that you do some shooting and with very little powder residue you can fire more shots between cleanings. One other advantage is the powder charges are smaller so you get more shots from a pound of powder.

I was just wondering what the differance between smokeless powerder and regular powder is because i seen they changed the law and says you can use smokeless now and just wondering what would be more beneficial

To be perfectly clear, DO NOT USE SMOKELESS POWDER IN ANY MUZZLELOADER OTHER THAN THE SAVAGE 10ML (or, evidently, one of the Bad Bulls) - you WILL blow up if you do.

ONLY black powder or black powder substitute (Pyrodex, et al) belongs in 99.5% of muzzleloaders.
