how often to repack non boat wheel bearings?

Gadgetman

Question

I have a small trailer that I use to haul my wheeler and other misc. dump around during the year. The hubs never get placed under water. How often should I repack these bearings? every couple years, every five years? Or is it more of a mileage related answer

I've often thought about how often to repack the bearings on the trailers with small tires myself. It seems like a good majority of the ones broken down on the side of the road have the smaller tires? I think most of the problems are caused by under inflated tires but you do see quite a few missing hubs.

I wouldn't think that every couple of years would be bad. I would bet that a lot of them haven't seen a bearing pack in several years. The hardest part would be trying to remember when the last time was. If your thinking about it it may be the perfect time to get it done.

The cost of a couple seals and an hour of your time is way less than a delayed trip and possible some serious $$.

I know what you mean about he ones on the side of the road with the little clown car tires on them. I have 13" tires on the trailer and a dust cap on the hub. I probably put 1000 miles on it a year. I suspect that the trailers iwth the tiny tires just spin so fast that they get super hot regardless of how well lubed they are. I just smile when people with those type trailers fly by on I-94 going 75 or 80 mph. I guess I am going to err on the safe side and get them done now before the pilgrimage up to Red.
