Skeets
Choose a lake with lots of small pike. These lakes can handle the pressure of spearing. Please don't spear the biggins', they deserve to live another day!
Guest
My father-in-law always told me to "keep the tips of the spear in the water"(doesn't spook the fish as easily) and just drop it..."you don't haf'ta throw the darn thing"!
Piker
Get a decoy with a spinner on it (unless you use live decoys), and maybe a couple different colors. You want to have the decoy move enough to attract the fish, but you'll actually see the fish come in more often when the decoy is "resting". Use thick enough line that if a pike hits it, it won't rip it off. Make sure your spear is sharp, your hits will be more likely to be lethal and not leave a wounded one. Plus, like the previous post you won't have to throw as hard. Try an Fish Toys ice saw if you can, they're awesome for cutting a spear hole. Don't forget to tie your spear down. Lower the spear into the water just enough so it won't splash, too close might spook 'em. The darker the house the better, you'll be able to see around you better, sometimes they stay away on the outskirts. Have fun, it's a blast. Sometimes you look down and their just there, like deer hunting.

rmh2o
dont put your decoy or live bait to far down I only put them about 4-6 feet below ice depending on depth and dont fall asleep and fall in the hole- dont laugh it can happen
Guest
Step outside once in a while and get some fresh air,it could save your life.Reason being carbon monoxide.A young gril died this week and her brother is in the hospital. Be carefull!!The fish always look bigger in the water too. Spear the 3-7 pounders let the big 12-25+ pounders go.More fun to catch them on a line anyways. Remember not to spear MUSKIES they are illeagal.

Kingfisher
The best decoy I found in 30 years of spearing is an electric spinner with a rheostat set at 60 r,p,minute, using 2, 3 1/2" "Aqua-spoons" (same as daredevil) white with a fluorecent orange stripe down the middle, hook narrow end up facing opposite ways. Lower spoon half way to the bottom, but never over 6' down. If there are whitefish in the lake they will also decoy, they rarely stop and look, like a northern. Once or twice in an hour if you don't see anything give the spoons a pull up and let flutter down. High noon has been top time, and often large northerns run in pairs, so get ready for another one very soon. Good luck!
Bruce Mosher
You'll have to check out my HSOforum at www.todaystackle and look around until you see the "Mini Teaser" It's a brand new compact D Battery operated Teaser for attracting fish. Not only Northerns, we even use it to attract Panfish and then you will catch them on your other rods. The trick with a teaser is that it spins your spoon at a very slow speed which basically mesmerizes the Northerns when they come in to investigate. Use a good snap swivel below the teaser and another snap swivel on top of your spoon so that you wont have line twist.
