Knock off lures, anyone use them?

Going through wal-mart and picking up some tackel for this winter I noticed that once in awhile wal-mart has some off name tackle that basicly mimicks some of the name brand takle. (for instance a red and white dare devil, acme sidewinders, sweedish pimples and the do jigger.) I picked up a few of these and can tell that they are made of a little cheaper material, but do seem like they would work. Anyone using these knock offs? How do they work? Will they standup to the fishing conditions well?

I guess maybe i should have been more specific. What I want to know is how do the hooks, paint, and snap rings on these lures hold up. They look like cheaper material, and might not hold up like they should. Just wanting to know if anyone has had problems with that or if I am just being stupid about it.

I would probably replace the hooks. I usually replace hooks on Swedish Pipples anyway in favor of some Eagle Claw trebles or singles

I have turned into a "red hook" believer and do the same with my Swedish Pimples and throw red hooks on them

I believe that alot of the knock off stuff is made in China and some of it is crappy, some of it good, depends on what you buy?

There are probably alot of things we don't even think about, that are produced out of the country, assembled here, packaged here and carry reputable names.

There was just a stink about some toys that carry a very big and trusted name, having been made in China and having lead paint....I'm sure it happens with all kinds of products, fishing tackle included, just check the packages, or the product you buy, even name stuff and it will say right on there.

Alot of the stuff you buy at JR's is knock off stuff, made in China. At least the smaller stuff like ice jigs etc. I haven't had any problem with it?

Somehow I can't see paying like $1.99, or $2.29 for a lousy feather jig, when I can get 10 of them for the same price and they haven't shown me that they don't work just as well, the smaller stuff that is...I couldn't tell you weither the knock off lures work, as I don't use lures alot and when I do, it is usually some kind of Rapala. Mostly I use jigs, plastics and plain old hooks and I trust EagleClaw.....but I haven't checked the back of the packages lately either.

I personally try to avoid the "Made in China" label as much as possible. But that is likely a much larger conversation, and my choice as a consumer.

I would gladly spend a little more money for something that has some quality and durability.

That being said I do have a few 'knock' off lures and don't think they are that much more horrible. Granted the paint on my 'daredevil' has flaked off, and I spent some time sharpening the hook, but I think its more of a moral argument than an issue of the fish catching ability.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
