Hello,

I have a small problem, hope you would be willing/able to help.

I am from Minnesota, round the ripe age of 44 y/o. I have moved with the Department of Defense/Air Force to Hill AFBUT, and was invited to go ice fishing with the boys last year. Now these guys are from California, and I had a point to prove, along with a reputation to uphold. When I walked out onto the ice, I carried Grampa Ferguson's old ice fishing pole, which was basically an orange broomstick with a long sharp ice pick in the end of it, dowels sticking out at an angle to hold the line.

These bozos have made fun of me ever since, but always stop talking when I ask who " who caught the biggest fish" & who reached their limit first"? We were perch fishing, and I had my 5 year old along for the first time as well.........

I asked the simple question "how many arms down ya gotta go", as they were about ten minutes into fishing, but all I got back were blank stares. I have told these guys over and over that if they were to go on a Minnesota lake with their fancy poles, people would bring them into a fishing shack, and we' wouldn't find them till April.........

What I am wondering, is if by chance I could get a photo of someone holding/fishing with a pole that I have described - similar to Grampa Ferguson's, and perhaps a photo of one - as if it was for sale, like an ad? If I can just get a pic though of anyone, I could edit it into an ad........

If you have a heart, let me know.

I hail from Arden Hills, grew up a block from Lake Johanna, attended Mounds View High School if you know where that is.

Regards,

Terry Kelley

Hey Terry

I've got one of those rods you describe - mine was made commerical, but you wrap the line around a couple of pegs for storage, and it does have the nastiest looking ice pick end.

Found it in the basement when I moved in to my first house - used it for several years too. I can even remember my step-dad making some of these types of rods - from old broom sticks when I was a kid.

I don't know that I have of picture of mine in action, but I can get one for you at some point. How soon do you need it?

I threw my old fishin sticks away years ago. I started fishin when was old enough to drive. I didnt have much money so I built the stuff I needed to. Mine where built out of an orange broom stick. Used wood dowel to wrap the line around and eye screws for guides. Pounded a 16 penny in the end then cut off the head and filed it to a point.
Caught more then my share of fish with those old sticks. When you caught a fish you set the hook and raised your arm high, then with your other arm you swept the line and then again with the stick and so on. I was damm good at doing that and when done right its like poetry in motion. If the fish ran you gave it line by your sweeping of the line in reverse. If these guys never saw the old sticks, tellum they havent been fishing long. smile.gif
I kinda miss my old fishin sticks.

I don;t have a picture, but one way to check on the net is to go to Yahoo or Google, and on their main pages, there are some tabs at the top. ONe says "Images". Click on that and you will then have a search box that only looks for images based on you serach criteria. I tried looking for a picture for you for a little while under search of "ice fishing" on Google and got a lot of pictures to show up. None with those Jigging Broom sticks you are talking with. I gave up after a while since i have to work too. Well, hope that helps, maybe put other search criteria like ice fishing poles, or jig sticks or something like that. Different search engines can yield different results too.

I collect those old sticks, and old minnow buckets, augers, ice scoops, whatever ice fishing stuff I find at flea markets and garage sales. I especially like the old homemade sticks like you described. If you really need a picture,I can take one this weekend of several versions and email it to you. Let me know!
BTW - I still use them from time to time just like me and grandpa used to. I'm 43, and nostalgic for the good 'ole days. Even though I have nearly every peice of electronics a guy can get for ice fishing!

I still have and use both the old style jiggle sticks and the kind with the pegs and spearlike end. I don't use them much but they still do see some action a couple of times a year when I have a buch of kids with. I grew up doing the hand over hand thing and I figure so should they. You can still find and buy this sort of tackle, though it is becomming less visable all the time. It's a shame because there's more bragging mileage to be had from a barehand battle than a battle aided by a Quantum system but like most others I opt for ease over tradition.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
