Moose Hunt Scouting Tip

Here is a tip I learned from moose hunting last year. We did not figure it out until after our hunt had already started.

When scouting clearcuts and such. Moose tracks were hard to see unless there was mud. The deer left tracks while the moose did not. We spent our time looking for tracks and such but only saw minimal sign.

The best time to scout these clearcuts with potential is VERY EARLY-- Drive out to the the nearest access point and walk in before first light on calm mornings and listen Bring your binoculars/Cameras. You would be surprised as to how far you can hear a bulls grunt or the simple cow talk.

If you have the spruce swamps nearby all the better.You could also get out to a great vantage point as well.

We did all of our scouting from 9:00 AM on and did not see one moose. We found areas that looked good - that contained a few tracks but we had no idea as to if there were any moose activly using the area

We figured things out about day 2 of our hunt. You could even carry a shotgun out early and pick up a few grouse on the walk back out. Spend the middle of the days fishing!!!!!!

We did end up with our moose however it was a 3 1/2 year old bull. We saw 28- 30 moose before we closed the deal. Saw 2 very big bulls- no shot oportunities
