Elk Zones or Maps

Recommended Posts

Was just doing some searching for info. about elk hunts in CO. CO Division of Wildlife has some good statistics, not the most user-friendly, but helpful none the less if you take the time to read over it. Preference points needed and chances of being drawn, etc. What I am curious about is where are the zones or maps. If you could post a link or explain, that would be great.

The Colorado game/fish/ parks HSOforum has some info. I've always hunted a draw unit. You can apply as a party so if one person in your party draws everyone in the party will get a tag. We had 7 in our party, so really everyone in our party had a 7 times greater chance of drawing than an individual applying alone.

Is that for bulls or cows? I hate to be picky, but my first reaction would be to want to go for bulls. I mean, I can get meat here in Minn. Nothing against cow hunts, but an elk bull head for the wall would be pretty sweet.

Our draw unit was for any elk. The unit next to ours is bulls only and you can buy the licence over the counter. It would be great to get a herd bull but if it's the last day of your hunt a cow or calf isn't bad. Yeah you can get meat in MN but it's not elk. Not to be a snob and I really enjoy eating deer but it doesn't compare to elk.

Not sure what you're after DaChise.....is it jusst a topo map or are you looking for a map that shows the different tag areas...the CO-DOW HSOforum has the map of zones on the last page, then you have to match those up with the licenses available, after that you find the topo. I agree with Peder, when I lived in CO and could buy a resident bull tag for $30 and a cow tag for $25, I waited as long as I could for that bull, but with a week long season and lots of hunters (in some zones) it comes down to "take what you can get". Especially since out of state tags are more than 10 times that much respectivly. You can get the Vail Hiker, which covers a lot of the ground in the most accessible areas, or pick up a topo map at the local USFS station.

Thanks shiner. Just looking for the actual application maps, like MN's deer zones and areas. I'm always tinkering, planning, scheming...... grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

It might be a few years off for me but I really want to do it so I figured I'd start looking around and finding out about it.
