Rolling sturgeon on the St. Croix?

Yes.. they roll on the croix too. Sometimes if there isnt a lot of traffic they jump quite a bit too.

Usually when the fish are rolling they are also actively biting. We came off a few hour dry spell 2 nights ago and suddenly the fish started rolling occasionaly and the action started a few minutes later.

Hey, cool pics on previous posts...and the eel is awesome.

I have caught sturgeon north of taylor's falls (near Grantsburg) from shore. Is there a general area one could shore fish sturgeon on the lower croix? I know most sturgeon fisherman I have talked to fish from a boat and use electronics to locate fish and holes. What should one look for as a shore angler?

Also, what seems to fish better....shad or crawlers? Thanks, Eric

Thanks for the info everyone, My fishin buddy wimped out so I wont make it out there this weekend. Hopefully some time before the season closes.

erickol, I have always used crawlers on a circle hook. This is in the Rainey as I have yet to fish the Croix for sturgeons. I would look for some deep spots by shore, sturgeons are easy to catch if you get a bait infront of them.

Crawlers, shad, sucker...they all work and you'll get differing opinions on which work better. They all have advantages and disadvantages. You get two rods on border water, so I usually spread out a smorgasboard to see if I can find what they want.

I'm leaning towards Shad right now. Crawlers have been getting picked apart by roughies.

Agreed. Its hard to catch a sturgeon when the sheephead have already eaten your bait.
