Getting Waypoints off an old GPS

I've got an old Garmin GPS 12map from 1999, and I want my 200some points taken off it for when I get a new GPS, like an H2Oc. When I get the new GPS, I'll ask about uploading those points, but for now, my question is, how do I get those waypoints off the old GPS? I suppose there is some software? How compatible is this software with uploading to newer units?

Here is a program that you can use to get the waypoints off the garmin 12. It is called DNR Garmin and is available free from this DNR site.

This program won't be capable of uploading the points into the H2Oc, but you can save the points in a text format that other software can probably upload them for you. I only use Garmin, so I am not that familiar with software that works with the other brands.

Do you have a data cable for your 12 ?

If so, there are a couple programs you could use, gps trackmaker or easy gps, both are free programs, do a google search. I like the gps trackmaker program, I use it to pull waypoints off of my GPS II ( similar to your 12 ) and also a Garmin Vista.

I just got done transfering my waypoints from a Garmin Vista to a Lowrance GlobalMap, very easy to do, once again, I used gps trackmaker to do that.

The data cable I use for my GPS II and Vista communitcate thru a serial port on the computer, if you don't have a serial port you can buy a USB - Serial adapter or find a computer with a serial port on it.

Just might have to do that. I haven't messed around too much with DNR Garmin, but I'm familiar with their free downloads and other GIS software.

I might have to stop by for that cable some time and shoot the breeze. I'm looking up at the turkey fan I mounted from this spring. What a hunt! I'm hoping George will let me stay at his place for a few more years.

I've got one last semester to go (knock on wood), so maybe when it wraps up we could hit the ice some time.
