Cabo San Lucas

I'm going to be in Cabo in February and would like to get out fishing for a day or two. I'm not real big into the deep sea marlin type adventures where you may only hook up with one fish per day. I'd rather stay busy with a reef type \ light tackle excursion. We did a trip to Key West in February this year fishing the flats and it was a blast. Looking for something similar to this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We fished there last year and had a blast. We went for Yellowfin Tuna and had so much luck we spent the afternoon fishing Marlin (caught 2 of them). My parents also fished right off the rocks for Redfish. What I'm saying is that most charters will be willing to fish what ever you want. I have a couple names if you want.

BGP; Cabo is a great fishing location, but the nearshore/inshore fishing isn't what put it on the map. And cold feb water isn't going to help, sorry. There might be yellowfin around, but the bite could be quite some distance from Cabo. If you're renting a car, you might want to try the panga fleet up at La Playita, back toward the airport. Most of the captains know whats biting, and will steer you in the right direction. Just don't expect to fish for something thats not there; Cabo waters vary a lot from year to year, and if the bite isn't on for one species, try for whatever is biting at the time. Feb can be a great month for marlin!

Even though you don't want to fish for Marlin, I'd still suggest it. You never know, maybe you'll hook up with one. When I was down there, we took a charter Marlin fishing. Just be sure to let the captain know you want to catch Dorado (Mahi Mahi) too...they'll pick up some bait for this. If you get into Dorado, you'll have a blast! And the best part is, you get to keep 'em. We ate plenty while we were down there and also had a bunch to bring back with us.

I also spent a lot of time shore fishing too. We got a few, but that was nothing compared to the fun of the charter.

I booked with Minerva's when I was down there. The charter was excellent, but I'm sure there are many other great charter's there as well. The December time frame isn't the best for fishing...

If you want to try shore fishing for rooster fish, sierra, etc., you don't need a license...at least I didn't a few years ago.

Was down in the Bahamas and it wasn't anything like they showed online. 3 hurricanes in 14 months.

Another question. How is the tide down there? What I mean is, where you fish for marlin does it get real rough? I'm ok with it but my wife will be miserable. Do they take you off shore a ways where the seas could be rough or do they fish inland more?

BGP; no tidal influence; the offshore fishing can be anywhere from a few miles out to as much as a 2 hour boat ride. Talking Dec thru march, Cabo waters are pretty cold; not much fishing close in, so expect a ride of some length. You can check the day (or 2) before and see where the bite has been and get a good idea. Make the call morning of as to whether your wife wants to go out. But if the bite is way out and you ask the capt to stay close, don't expect much. I've fished with Pisces fleet for a few years now, they are a good outfit and communicate well. A few other good choices are Redrum, El Budster, Cabo Magic, Marlin Masters, to name a few. I'll be down Oct 10-17 and am fishing marlin masters and redrum in a small fun tournament with 25 guys or so, will report back. If you contact Pisces, tell them Terry from MN suggested them:) Where are you staying? If you're not after beachfront, I can suggest several in town hotels that are clean, safe, and moderatly priced. Eyes; Dec can be a very good marlin time, you can check several sources online and get accurate, up to date reports shortly before you go and see if the bite is on. I'd just book a day anyway:) I've had a couple very good days in early janruary, including a 5 marlin day a couple years ago, so don't put too much stock in any fishing calenders you see. You can check a dozen of em' on different websites and find quite different info. Go to Mexfish.com for weekly reports for Cabo, and the whole pacific coast of Mexico.
