Ever wonder how a lake can be so rough from waves but most of the time when it freezes its smooth as glass!If it would freeze like them waves we would have foot holds for thoes big fish! HA HA!

Probably because the lake doesn't freeze till those waves calm down.

In the winter they are called presure ridges or stacked up ice

Next time your out on the lake, make sure to watch the ice when a car zooms across. You can see a moving wave. You're in the wave when the water in your hole suddenly moves up and down from a car.

It would really make it rough driving to our spots...But my friends who travel on the "soft" water in aluminum boats wouldn't know any difference.

I stayed at a cabin on a lake that froze overnight with a sustained 20-25 mph wind with temps in the single digits. I couldn't believe it. I figured the wind was blowing the tops off the waves and this spray turned to slush. The waves kept getting lower and lower with more slush. Finally, the water was so slushy no waves could be produced and the lake froze.
