harvey lee
I was out with a friend last night attempting to coral a few flatheads. I started out with 5-6 inch bullies and there was not a bite for an hour. Then we put on live suckers and the action began. I missed my first five runs with a swing and a miss. The clicker would just sing and about the time I got the rod out of the holder, the fish would let go. Then, I thought ok, I put on a circle and let them try to run aways and drop it. The circle worked and we ended up catching a few. They would hit hard and run for a few seconds and drop it every time and the ONLY thing they wanted was a live sucker. I would switch back and forth with bait and the suckers were the go to bait. Beautifull night on the Minnesota.
I Da Man
Harvey, sounds like you might have been enjoying the frustrating runs of Gar Fish. They won't (never say never) touch a bully, but they'll nail a sucker and make the line out alarm sing. By the time a person picks up the rod...nothing. Then it starts all over again. I wonder if I could get the loop side of Velco to stick to a sucker???
ec30_06
The channels were picky on the cutbait last night too. They would grab the bait, load the rod up, hook up for about three turns of the reel handle and come off. Ended up catching one big channel and one flat. Missed alot of fish on bullies and cut creek chubs last night. very frustrating.
dps
Suckers werent doing squat for us last night. Shad was getting the only bites.. a quick slam and that would be it until 5-15 minutes later and the same thing. I couldnt hook up with the cats at all... A executive size sheephead was all I could get into the boat last night.
Fish'n guy
last night was fun reguardless of how many fish were missed!! It was just nice to be able to fish with ya again Tom and hell we still got a couple Flatties!!! It was pretty much the sucker version of all you can eat prime rib night at the local supper club!! I am pretty sure that these were cats due to the "rug burn" on the suckers rather than the deep gashes that the gar or walleyes usually leave on the bait. Fish'n guy
I know one had to be a channel by the quickness of the bite, but I am thinking that the others were flatheads due to the steady pull. Either way they were fish and not steriod induced bait!!
