Guest
Anyone have tips for fishing for cisco? When do they begin spawing in the shallows?I fish a small lake that has depths to 80 feet, mostly a silt bottom.Any suggestions?
Greg Clusiau
UKALUM: I wouldn't worry too much about the bottom content. I have caught them at several different depths but most of them have come from right under the ice. Many times, I'll be fishing for walleyes or crappies and see them shoot through the hole, riding up pretty high. I'll either see them visually or on my Vexilar. At this point, I drop down a small jig with a piece of minnow or waxworm. Sometimes I have it ready with a plain hook and some bait. They're fairly aggressive and move about rather quick, so be ready to fish for them when they are spotted. If you take your time, they'll be gone. Scoot
akulum,If you want really specific and detailed info about ciscos, check out the info Toad has posted in the Brainerd forum. That dude knows his greasy, suspending fish! It's older info, but can be found under the topic of open water trolling. Or... just do a search for ciscos.Scoot
Gissert
Ciscos spawn in the fall, sometimes not finishing until there is ice on the lakes.I often catch them as Greg mentioned, spotting them high in the water column as I fish for walleyes and perch. They are pretty nomadic, and will wander around quite a bit.If I want to catch a few, I will fish with a small pimple with a minnow head on it for the walleyes/perch. When I see ciscos on the vex, I will bring the bait up to them, and often they will hit the pimple/head combo. Sometimes they can be quite fussy about what they want. Guest
This past week I nailed them in the late afternoon until dark in about 11 feet of water. Best bait was a forage minnow tipped with a minnow head. They were all full of spawn so there is your key. Find a sand flat and hit them while you can. shefland
Up here on Kabekona Lake they cruise by your hole just underneath the ice by the hundreds! Usually in December and on top of the humps, be prepared! ice flies and wax worms. There are so many when they swarm just beneath the ice they erode it rapidly and actually make it dangerous just overnight! Dave
