Charging Batteries

cray

Question

Is it ok to charge a battery using the trolling motor plug and running the current back through the fuse and into the battery? I used this system without any problems at first, but now i'm getting a lot of "fault" codes on the battery charger and cannot get a complete charge. When I hook directly to the battery it works just fine.

In general It's fine to do it that way. I'll bet your automatic charger is reacting to either a poor connection somewhere (loose or corroded) or to the voltage drop that happens between the battery and the TM plug (regardless of the quality of the terminal connections). You can easily have a voltage drop of a few tenths depending on wire length, wire size, and quality of terminal connections.
