hovermn
I have a 14' Deep and wide lund with a '74 25 hp Johnson hanging on the back. The plate says this boat has a max hp rating of 35. Would I see a good improvement in speed and hole shot with the 10 extra horses of a 35? I took it out yesterday with the GPS and bested at 23 mph with just me. When a second person comes aboard, there's a noticeable difference in speed, probably because the bow is plowing through more water. However, it's enough to make me look into adding the larger motor. I'd also like to add T&T to help keep the boat trimmed right. Anyone running a 14' lund tiller with 35hp? Any thoughts?
Valv
I would have your motor checked by a shop, I had once a Mirrocraft 14' with a 30hp Mariner and could smoke bass boats on take off, with a 35mph top speed. It could be your prop or motor has low compression. You will gain some speed with a 35hp but not enough to justify the expense.
Fishing Junky
Even a new 25 to 30hp fourstroke WITH power tilt and trim should help you. The keywords here, are power tilt/trim imo. Your motor is older, and I'm not sure if it falls into the catagory where the power head is rated at 25hp and less at the prop?
polarsusd81
I have the same boat with an 85 Mariner 15 on the back. I went from a 12p to a 10.5p prop on there and noticed a huge difference. Also, if you motor doesn't have tilt and trim, you might have a pin style tilt mechanism on the mounting bracket. I played with that a bit and found the optimum setting and the boat flies. I can average about 25 mph with two people and a full boat of gear. It goes pretty well. I would check the prop and be sure you are not running one too steep.Tom
hovermn
All very good tips. The motor was in the shop earlier this year for a tune-up and was deemed a great runner. Valv also pointed out to me a while ago that it's next to impossible to find T&T for my year motor, one reason I was looking at picking up a newer motor, and a 35 at that. Just a thought. However, I've found that CMC makes a trim and tilt that will work with up to 35 hp called the PT-35. The motor clamps to that instead of the transom. At $390, maybe I'll go with that. Unfortunatly, my motor doesn't have any kind of tilt lock, but I can play with the trim a little. The guy I bought the boat from threw in the old prop for a spare. It's a 9X10. Now, here's the kicker. I took the prop off the motor and found a couple of things. 1. I can't read the pitch on the prop, but it's a 10". 2. The pin that keeps the prop from spinning came out in 3 pieces. It's also buggered up the prop where it sits. Hmmm.... So, this leaves me with a couple of questions. Obviously I'm going to buy a new prop and pin. First, the spare is pretty chewed up and looks like it's been bent up, and the prop off the motor is pretty buggered where the pin sits. Should I look for a 9" or 10" prop? What pitch should I look for? I can only assume that the motor came with a 9" prop. Should I go with that? hovermn
Okay, just punched in some numbers on the prop from the motor: 012109. Turns out it's a 9R9. 9" X 9 pitch?
dkf
I have a 05 Lund WC-16 with a 05 25hp Yam 2 stroke and I GPS'd it and got a tick over 25mph with about 800lbs of people and gear. It has a stock 11P alum prop which I'm going to be replacing with a 10P SS prop soon. With some trimming and weight movement you should easily be able to get over 25mph with your current set-up. I'm sure trim/tilt would help top speed.
Surface Tension
The 9x9 is for heavy loads. With just you in the boat your RPMs should have been way up there and your speed won't go above 23 mph with that prop. Hole shot should have been good with that prop. Move as much weight as you can out of the stern. There is a pin that you can move the position to trim the motor. If its down low the bow will plow. Experiment with those positions. I'd fix the 9x10 and see how that works. Send Jay the prop and then call him, he'll work with you. An after market T&T will cost more then the outboard is worth and IMO not needed with a 25 hp outboard. It'll also set the outboard back 6", with a counsel thats not a problem but with a tiller it is. I think you could spend that $400 on something else.
