Best choke to use?

Recommended Posts

Are you talking about the best brand or best size? Carlson makes nice chokes that fit nearly every model of gun, and if you don't mind spending money there's Patternmaster, WadWizard, Trulock to name a few.

If you're talking size, I like mod or imp. mod for decoying and some pass-shooting (up to 40-45 yds.)

Here's what you need to do then. Go buy a box of the shells you plan on using. Take one shell apart and count the number of pellets. Then place a paper target at different yardages. Shoot 1 shot take the target off, put a new one on for all 5 chokes. Don't forget to label the target with the yardage and the choke tube used. Do this for all the different yardages you would be shooting at. Then on your own time count up the number of holes in the target in say a 20 inch circle. With some chokes it easy to see the difference and you can eliminate them without counting others you would be surprised. I use 3 1/2 fiocchi, kents, or winchesters and the patternmaster will put 90-95% of the pellets in theat 20 inch circle at 40 yards.

Great advice about patterning your gun. I have been hunting with the same gun and cchoke for the past three years and just patterned mygun last weekend. Not only did I findwhich load it liked the best but I also foundit shot a little high and tothe right. I guess now I have another excuse!
