Yep, I've fished the Green. You didn't say what part of the Green you are fishing, but I'm assuming that you'll be fishing the tailwaters below the Flaming Gorge. The Green offers extremely clear water with decent rainbows and browns alike. Many fish in the 16-20" range. If you are not doing a float trip, you will most likely be fishing the area below Dutch John. You will be amazed by the number of visible fish. Fishing can be pretty challenging, as most fish get pretty selective by the end of summer. If you can, cast from longer distances and use smaller tippet. And don't forget about fishing the faster moving water (seams). As for flies, bring some scuds in green, pink and orange. Also bring caddis, pmd's and blue winged olives. Stop by the Green River Outfitters in Dutch John to pick up some of their tiny midge patterns, which will do pretty well. You will be surprised at the tiny patterns the local shops will sell. It's the only river where I've fished a size 26 dry. Bring a camera...this river and the canyon is definitely worth it.

Good luck in the marathon. I'm doing the Whistlestop Marathon on October 13.

Green river outfitters is where we planned to stop. Im hoping to pick us as many patterns here as I can, just because were on a fairly small budget. I am assuming flys will be a tad bit more expensive there. We will be fishing from the gorge, down to where it goes over the border, depending on the crowds, and weather. Were playing it by year.I will try to get some local patterns there, as you said their midge patterns.

Thanks for the luck, the race is actually run with the horses marathon. Im not much of a runner, but my father runs ultras, and I tag along a few times a year on the "SMALL" runs. I can do the distance, but heat kills me. And theres plenty of that on those plateaus out there. And we both fish, although hes more of the fly fisherman than I am, so we rolled it together into one trip. I can hang with the sunnies and bass around here just fine, but trout, especially in clear waters, will be a test for me. I have yet to start chasing trout around minnesota, but hope to some time soon. Theres just not enough time for everything, especially with two year olds at home. He really likes going in the boat, so Ive done all the bobber fishing one can handle this year.

Thanks for the replys gentleman.

Good luck at whistlestop, It should be some good running weather then in october.

Glad to help out, Joe. Sounds like you and your dad have a great trip planned. I've very jealous. Don't get discouraged if the fishing gets tough. Sometimes it can, especially during the afternoon. If it does, the scenery and river are definitely easy on the eyes.

Wish I would have browsed earlier. I live in glenwood springs CO and fish the Green which is 3 hours away maybe 4 times a year. I would have suggested one of the easiest ways to fly fish which is deadly this time of year. One fly setup. A size 10-14 fat albert. walk the banks make good casts and you will tear it up! Hope you had fun and if you go again this time of year try this method..

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
