How Heavy do you build a Bunk

Just about ready to put a bunk in. But I'm not sure how heavy to build it I would think you would put 2 X 4's on the wall but the framing for the auctual bunk itself. What have you guys done?

Asking myself that same question. I'm 165 lbs. So 2x4 s with 3/4 plywood should work. I'll probably put upright (vertical) 2x4 supports on all 4 corners since I've got the extra room to work with. Just a matter of how much more weight I want to add to my wheelhouse.

I used 2x4 s as the frame with wall paneling on the bottom and 1/2" plywood on top. I made the top so that I could open 4 different compartments to hide rods and tackle in. I made each one big enought for 3 or 4 rods with reels. Nicely out of the way when moving the house so that they don't get broke. smile.gif The best part if you don't look under the mattress you wouldn't know its there

I used 5/8 inch plywood for the bunks - for the bottom I framed up the bunk with 2x2's. For the upper bunk - I mounted a 2x3 to the wall (the long part of the bunk) - used barn hinges to attach the plywood to the 2x3 that was attached to the studs - 5/8" plywood sheet. I glued and screwed a 2x4 to the bottom front of the bunk where I mounted barrel bolts. In the wall I drilled a hole for the barrel bolts and mounted a small metal plate. Bunk folds down to use as a backrest and folds up when you want to use it. Works very well - Very solid even for a 250 pounder.
