Bird hunting west of Yankton

Recommended Posts

Will be hunting at a friends place west of Yankton near the river. Not familiar with area. Says he seen lots of pheasants. Looking at regs it says there are chukar partridge in So, Dak. Any body familiar with that area?

Fishroger, Yankton is not know for it's pheasant numbers but the further you get west and north of there the better it gets. There's always pocket's that can have good bird numbers where you find habitat. My plave is NW of Yankton about 1 hour and we have good bird numbers. If your buddy is seeing birds that is a vote of confidence.

As far as chukar go, not sure. but I suspect they are more of a mountain bird and you may find some in the black hills on the western part of state. A call to SD Game and Fsih may be your best bet. Let us know how it goes.....

we hunt somewhat west of yankton, near wagner. We have alway had good luck hunting pheasant around there.

Reports from what I hear this year is shaping up to be pretty good. We didnt have to rough a winter, had a great spring, been a little dry but the birds are doing really well.

We have seen partridge but they are few and far between.

However I have seen alot of chukar. Our NAVHDA club uses them for training and the land we train on has them all over now lol. I have even seen a handful of pheasant even near Sioux Falls. Gonna be a good year. I am going nuts waiting to take my shorthair out and have some fun! Cmon October!
