Buck44
Hi all, I am in the NAVY and stationed in the Twin Cities. I spent 6 yrs on a nuclear sub out in Seattle and am now here pursuing an officers program at U of M. I grew up in Michigan and it is great to be back in the midwest. I cant wait to get out on the ice. I just went out and bought a portable, vexilar, power auger, rods, reels, and countless other things. The only problem is that I dont have the foggiest clue on where to spend my time out on the ice. I had decent luck on Bald Eagle and White Bear this summmer, but dont know where to try this winter. I would like to stay close to the cities, so if anyone has any recommendations for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Coming from Seattle, I Havent met too many people yet in Minnesota. If anyone is looking for a fishing partner for a trip or two, let me know. Ive been following this HSOforum for a couple weeks now and think it great. I cant wait to meet some of you out on the ice and get to know you a little better.----Buck44
Guest
Welcome/ Bone lake in Washington county holds some nice Crappies and Walleyes. Walk out from the public access, to the left out about 100-150 yards is a 22 foot hole. You may also see some portables houses there. Crappies and Walleyes bite best right before dark and well into the night. Glow jigs and Crappies minnows work best. shefland
First ice, Lake Harriet Walleyes will amaze you, do not start fishing till 4:30 PM, then Lake Minnetonka, go on weekdays if you can. I live in northern minnesota, but grew up and worked my career in the cities, these places and pool 2 of the Mississippi are the only places I miss about the cities. Steve Foss
Buck: Welcome home. Interesting, what a submariner's doing in Minneapolis. If you're part of the silent Navy (fast-attack or missile boat?), you know that anything that shows up on your Vexilar (sonar) is a target. Thank God that bearings are a simpler matter while ice fishing. Looks like you're all geared up. Don't limit yourself to the Cities. Yeah, the Cities have good ice water (wow, how's that for an oxymoron?), but pay attention to two posts on this forum in particular. That would be Upper Red Lake (crappies, whitefish and big pike) and Lake of the Woods (walleye, sauger, big pike). You can rent heated sleeper houses with bunks at either lake (sleeper houses are WAY more comfortable than sleeping bags on snow, and maybe more comfortable than sub bunks) and you can simply drive right out on plowed ice roads. Navy, thanks for being Navy. My dad was a communications officer on the U.S.S. O'Hare a billion years ago, and I thank you for allowing the home folks to sleep soundly at night (although many of us have those guns protected by the 2nd Amendment). So much for you (and everyone, including me) to learn, and so many here willing to teach you. Buck44
Thanks alot for the tips guys. I will keep those lakes in mind. I probably wont be able to make it up to Red lake or Lake of the Woods, but I will definitly check out Harriot and Minatonka. As for the Navy question, I was stationed on a Ballistic Missile submarine, the USS Florida. It was a good experience, but Id rather be back here in the midwest doing some fishing. Its pretty hard to fish from a sub. Thanks again for all the tips----Buck

chunkytrout
Imagine the crank baits you could troll from a sub.
