slick2526
O.K. slick2526
Do any of you a braided line or fireline, or fireline micro ice? I use a ball bearing swivel and connect a flouro leader in the summer wonder if it is worth it in the winter? I seem to have descent luck with the way it is. Any body have any higher results using a flouro leader? One more question. Can anyone suggest a good 2lb monofilament for the winter? I want to use it on my micro-lite rod, or atleast one of them. Would be for very lite jigs. CANT WAIT FUR DE ICE EH?!
Guest
Have not used the flouro leader but, as per someones advice on a previous post I am going to try it this year. That 4 lb fireline micro ice is it much different from the regular 4 lb fireline that I use?
slick2526
Its spoce to have a different formula the makes it for it will not soak up the water as easy and freeze. so really im guessing the braid is just smaller but tighter in the line. I have herd that normal firline freezes easier.
Guest
slick2525, HT Enterprises markets a pretty good micro mono.
Wables
Chiro, A flouro leader is par for the course where I fisn on Little Bay de Noc on Lake Michigan. I typically use a 3' 8# flouro leader under a swivel for jigging. Last year I used fusion for my main line, but am switching back to mono for this season. I think I lost a few fish between the lack of line stretch and the short rod length.[This message has been edited by Wables (edited 11-11-2002).]
Guest
slick2526,I like to use 2lb test Berkely micro ice for my crappie setups. Works real well, Very limp but strong. I use 3lb test on other crappie rods as well. 4lb test for perch because walleyes are present in most cases. As far as walleyes go, 6 or 8lb test. For pike I use 8 to 12lb test. Most of my line choices are Berkely Cold Weather or Berkely Micro Ice. I use Fireline occationally too.You said it best....bring on the ice!!!Good Fishin, Matt. rascalP
I've used 4lb magnathin for quite a few years.(for panfish) Same diameter as other 2-3lb. It's what I use for stream trout fishin and has defintly tested tough from the countless wraps around tree limbs. It has seemed to be harder to get -- neither Cabelas or Bass pro have it in their catalogs, but Fleet Farm carries it. I hope Dupont hasn't dropped it. What ever you use, If you don't fish with a bobber, you have to go LIGHT -- any coil will eat up your strike indication. rascalP
Guest
I am going to give the 8/1 PowerPro a shot. This late fall I gave the 8/1 a try for jigging walleye, in 28 deg weather it didn't freeze up the guides nearly as badly as the other lines I tried. Good feel and stayed straight without coiling. I do my fair share of deadsticking so I think I will like the stuff for that.Spooled up a few micro lite ice reels with it and they worked well. Even that moody underslung tiny Zebco I like for sumo perch liked the 8/1 PowerPro line.I plan to do a side by side comparison with the PowerPro & the FireLine MicroIce and see what works best for me. ------------------Backwater Eddy..><sUMo>Backwater Guiding"Ed on the RED"(701)-281-2300[email protected] http://ed-carlson.fishingbuddy.com
Guest
BWE,I am not familar with 8/1 powerpro...could you elaborate a little?
slick2526
Finnaly someone else besides me who likes powerpro. I think its a great line, better than any other braid I have used. The best thing is it wont wear out ceramic guides if you have that type on your rod. Claims to shed most of the water when the line is reeled back onto your spool so it shouldnt freeze up. I caught the muskie on the front page with 20lb powerpro. Yea, I should of had Rick put slick2526 intstead of Adam Lundsten. Also, has anyone tried Tec-Tan line for ice fishing? Bushwacker
Does anybody notice a difference if they use the smoke colored Fireline or if they use the Flame Green color? Does the color attract fish or scare them away?
Guest
i really don't think the color of the line makes any difference,i have always used the berkerly icefishing line which is very limp and strong but i have some old fishing buddies and all they ever use i that green highly visable line and they out fish me every time,i think they can c their line much better for them very lite bites
Guest
The 8/1 PowerPro is #8 test that is less than #1 diamiter in thickness. I think it is a bit tougher then #8 test myself?Thin as pubic hair on a sumo frog and twice as tough Eh.------------------Backwater Eddy..><sUMo>Backwater Guiding"Ed on the RED"(701)-281-2300[email protected] http://ed-carlson.fishingbuddy.com
Guest
I would definitely suggest a flurocarbon leader. In a lot of bodies of water line color does not make a difference, but in some clear lakes with finicky fish it makes all the difference in the world. I can think of several instances when line color has made a difference. Even on Mille Lacs this past winter when the fishing was hot, clear line was outproducing colored lines. I can remember one instance when I was outfishing my brother-in-law 11-3 and he couldn't figure out what he was doing wrong. Same jig, same jigging style, rotating between the same holes, both using vex's...etc. He kept saying they're down there but they don't want to bite. He had on blue or green 8# line on, I don't remember exactly. I told him to try one of my rods with 6# vanish on. See if that makes a difference. It sure did. After that he got a lot more of those lookers to bite. We also experimented with different lines on the rattle reels in the permanent fish house both during the day and at night. During the day there was a noticable difference, but at night it didn't seem to matter as much.I'll always have on monofilament or flurocarbon at least as a leader. slick2526
I know during the summer when using 10/2 powerpro I used a 8lb segaur carbonpro leader with a bearing connected in between the lines. But I was using close to a 4ft leader. how big of a flouro leader do you use in the winter?
Guest
On most of my rods I have strictly vanish on them. On tip-ups and the rattle reels I like to use six to eight foot leaders. The extra bit of leader doesn't hurt any. Also, if you notice any nicks in the bottom of the leader you can just chop of the bad spot and retie.
