Fishing Pressure___Part 2

After my last post about fishing pressure, I have a different point to discuss amonst you guys.............After this weekend, seeing up to 4 boats fishing the same snag, it got us to thinking......Do you guys think Flatheads wise up to seeing the same 6 inch Bullhead,over-and-over with a big silver hook in it? Can fishing pressure for Flatheads be taken to that level?

Yes and no. When spots get heavily pressured(10 people fishing and lines everywhere) the fish do tend to shut down and move on, or just not bite. That is my take from experience while fishing with many others shore fishing in 2005(another good year). The nights that 2 of us would show up to a fishing spot, many fish were caught and the action was consistant... the night several of us would show up with baits everywhere.. usually resulted in just a couple fish if any.

I have heard some people say it doesnt make a difference how many lines on a snag.. I disagree in a pressured area.

Fish do tend to get caught over and over again about a week apart in many cases this year... so I guess they eventually forget that bully with a meat hook in it isnt good for them, but that fish is more prone to be caught without 15 rigs being thrown at it.

I agree with Dave, Yes and No.

#1- I have no problem pulling onto a spot where a boat was just fishing. If they left at midnight, I'll move right in and fish til 2am if I really wanted to fish that spot. Timing is a major, major factor in flathead fishing, you have to have your bait in a good spot at the right time. Sometimes that sundown bite isn't the best time.

#2- Flatheads will eat other baits than bullheads. If everyone is fishing bullheads, switch it up to creek chubs or suckers (cut or alive). Give 'em something different.

#3- As the river sees more pressure and more anglers, you're going to have to think outside the box on how you approach the river. Find new spots, find different spots, fish at a different time, different techniques, baits, locations, etc.

#4- I've heard of the same fish being caught a number of different times off the same spot in a year. If a spot gets hit hard for a few days, give a 3-4 day rest and fish it again, they'll be back.

while there might be some effect, a flathead doesn't swim up to a bait, check it out, think to himself, "hmm, that hook doesn't look good" and swim away.

Perhaps, they can become conditioned and more eager to bite something different, but I think if they are hungry, they are going to eat.

I've now seen big fish caught this year from a chunk of cut bait, to the biggest legal sucker you can fish. From creek chubs, to bullheads.

I think you can get in a rut of using the same baits all the time. LFC never used to use bullheads, ask him about that sometime wink.gif

If fisherman adapt and overcome, "pressure" is just another word for, "I'm frustrated and I'm blaming it on everyone else"
