trolling question

Recommended Posts

Ive been reading a few posts from people who troll right behind the boat in the propwash for Pike.

Does this really work?

Does it work better in deep or shallow water? Over weed beds or along them?

going out tomorrow to burn some 340 a gallon gas and would like to try this.

thanks

Irish,

While not directly in the propwash we were trolling #18 rapala's 30' back, in and out the weeds over 6-8' of water and we smacked the pike and eyes. The key was ripping the bait frequnetly to get them to hit. 30' back is about as short as I go, dont have that much confidence to run them any closer to the boat.

For Pike it really works. Anything less than 2 or 2.5 boat lengths should be the prop-wash zone. Also don't be afraid to experiment with faster speeds. I usually pick them up on the edge of the main weedline. Sometimes on the edge of the outer weedline.

I usually switch to this tactic when I get frustrated with clearing weeds from the lure and BAM, there's a pike on the end of the line.

There was an article in the outdoor news about high and tight trolling. They claim you only need 8ft of line out from the boat with the tip of your pole 2ft under water to keep the lure down. This type of trolling supposedly attracts the more aggressive fish.

I've had this work for me a couple times, both were late summer before a big thunderstorm. Was trolling 5-7 mph, and about 10' of line out with a big crankbait on a 12' weedline. Never caught any big ones, but you swear every fish is 30"+ when trolling at that speed!! wink.gif Kinda got a kick out of all the funny looks I was getting too. grin.gif

What is the general thought on where these fish are coming from when you troll like this? I mean, are these fish chasing the lure from behind, or are they hitting the lure as it's zooming in front of their faces?

I've done the "speed trolling" thing a quite a few times, and believe me it does work! I have caught some of my biggest pike that way. And when they hit it is like a ton of bricks just attached to the business end of the rod! So hang on!
