I got mine from Walmart 7 years ago. Worked great until this year. Got new one from there. They are the $69.00 variety. While waiting, and waiting,......and waiting in line the guy in front of me ws returning one he had gotten less than a year out of. Maybe just a bad one. So is 6 years out of a starter battery good, bad, normal?

Just a thought, a few years back I was in a parts store for a starter battery, and the parts guy suggest a deep cycle, point being your alway drawing on it with the live well, night lights, graphs, etc. So I tryed one and have use them ever since with good success.

Dual purpose (crank/deep cycle) is the way to go. Treat em right and any lead/acid battery has an equal chance of survival. Cheap or not in my experience.

Maybe the the later technology gel cell or dry cells are more durable but I don't know anything about them.

I just put a new Wally World deep cycle in my 14' Lund yesterday. I use it both for starter battery and for my transom mount trolling motor. The old one was 5 years old. Pretty good service if you ask me. The old one developed a bad cell and didn't like to take a charge.

I've been using the "Fleet/Farm" brand of batteries. They last about 3 or 4 years and they are reasonably priced. I tried the more expensive brands and they lasted about the same time or less.

One bit of advice. I learned a long, long time ago, to not use my starting battery for anything other than starting my outboard. If you have the room in your boat, and you can afford one, buy another battery for the other electronic devices in the boat. Nothing sucks more than trying to pull start a big outboard because the battery went dead while playing the radio or running the trolling motor a little too long...

I have been using deep cycle's for starting since the regular starting battery that lasted 14 months died and have have the deepcycle for four years and it's still going strong. Some one was trying to tell me that using the deep cycle one for starting was bad for the starter but I haven't found that the case.

My 1900 Pro V came with a series 31 Dual purpose Interstate.

This battery ran everything in the boat except the trolling

motor for six years. I replaced it just because I thought it was about time for it to give up and leave me stranded.

I have an Exide that I've had for 5 years and still going strong. As far as using a deep cycle, that's what I did on my last boat for the outboard, the trolling motor and the electronics, but that was only a 25hp.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
