Poutwhacker
We are going up to fish LOW out of Morson on July 17-22.We're staying at Buena Vista. This is the first time I have fished this area and would appreciate any help/info anyone can give me to make the trip more enjoyable. For 'eyes it sounds like the reefs are the place to be. Do you jig or pull bottom bouncers? Again, any help will be appreciated. Thanks
Shorelunch
PW,My first bit of advice is to talk to Richard at BV. He, and the crew, will put you on, or point you in the right direction. Generally we troll around the reef before we fish it and see if they're scattered or schooled. If scattered we troll bouncers with spinners and minnows, leeches or Gulp cralwers. Otherwise, jig and a minnow or grub, heavy enough to keep bottom contact. As far as colors - white or chartruese jigs, probably 1/4 to 3/8 and hammered gold or silver, and orange spinners. I like the clip on style (with the black plastic clevis) of bouncers - the longer length - and pick up 1, 1 1/2 and 2 oz bouncers. Besides the reefs, you'll catch walleyes and smallies off of island with good structure and drop-offs and in the weeds as shallow as 4'. There are a number of good reefs just NW of Morson, from Manitou Isl to south of Dawson channel. Pick up a Canadian LOTW 6214 map at BV (or before and study) for that particular area. patrat78
Hey Poutwhacker We will be headed up to bunea vista from the 12-15 we do every year and we usually fish the reefs with spinners and jigs it about even for amount of fish caught by either one it seems like the spinners always end up with the big fish in our crew though . Also we have some island that we try out just to the north of bunea vista. I'll try to leave some fish for you so you can atleast have some good meals. Also we like to spend a calm afternoon casting for northern and smallmouth thats always a blast to get a diffrent fight.
Poutwhacker
Thanks for the info and the offer of fish. Hopefully our kids can catch enough to feed their old men. What road is the best to take up to BV? Looks like there are 3 options...North out of either Rainy River, Sleeman or Pinewood. Do you get your bait at BV? Looking forward to some R & R and good times w/the boys. Let me know how you did. Hope you have a good, safe trip. 'Pout
Shorelunch
Go to Sleeman, take a left and you'll be there in 1/2 hour or so. BV is a good place for bait. Have fun!
HAppnhook
Hey Pout, I will be at BV at the same time. Look for a Whaler if you want to trade fish tales!!Happ
Wild Thing
Do exactly what Shorelunch says! We don't get quite as technical. And once they are on the reefs big time I rarely use anything but spinners and crawlers. Crawlers are cheap and effective (You can bring them from home packe din shredded newspaper!) and if you use heavy enuff bouncers (1.5 ounce is good) you rarely get snagged cause you're fishin' up and down, not back. if you do get snagged, you can usually pop it off. Less time re-tying or backing up for snags. Don't be afraid to fish the very tops of reefs. You may get a few perch biteoffs, but sometimes the big walleyes prowl on the shallowest top of the rock. BV resort isn't fancy, but they do bring in a ton of fish. Good luck. You should nail them! You will get several fish over 24 inches I'm sure... Wild Thing
P.S. Forgot to suggest that you use spinners with some flotation, or blow up your crawlers. it really helps keep the hooks out of the rocks which can be a real headache, and it really cuts down on the snags unless you go too fast. good luck
