Another vote for the 8". I went with 48" shaft rather than the 42" as I fish URL a lot and that ice gets thick. At 5'10" it shouldn't be an issue for you. I'm an 1 1/2" taller and the longer shaft was not an issue.

You'll love the new machine. Make sure to do a search for the break in process. It's been covered here a few times.

I think the center point will help make the 48" bit safer when the cutting starts. I am 6'0" and the 48" is just fine. The ice may not get thicker than a couple feet but there is a surge of water once you break through so better to have a little room for error before getting the hot motor wet. It is an awesome machine, you may want to check out Amsoil Sabre Pro which is synthetic 2 stroke oil to make it extra happy.
