I put a new prop on a 15 hp. evenrude, its depth on the drive shaft was 3/16 less than the old one,I used washers as shims between the prop and nut,is this OK?also how tight do I tighten nut? When I snug it and go to the cotter hole on the tighter side Its got alot of ft.lbs. on it or do I leave it just hand tight so cotter pin aligns confused.gif

Does your motor have the correct washers for the prop - thrust washer on the back side and a thicker (or in your case a couple of washers) on the front side between the prop and the castle nut -ref 54 & 46 on image below?

With respect to how tight - I would go tight enough and maybe just a little past just getting the cotter pin in the hole. No need to reef it on.

If you add or remove an washer between nut and prop it will change the position of the nut and you will be able to insert cotter pin without tightening nut too much or too loose.

Part # 54 is there,I take it # 53 is the pressed in brass splined whatever,Part # 46 is what is missing,I put in 4 washers to clear the splines so nut # 45 would seat on them instead of a 1/4" gap between the prop and nut, when the nut was seated at the end of the threads.there was 1/4" of splines, which let the prop slop back & forth.

Valve all I can do is add another washer,if I remove one I'm back to gap between nut & splines

Part 46 is actually just a spacer to help seating nut against thrust washer in front of prop (part 54), if you give it a little more thickness you'll solve problem with cotter pin.
