"Aggressive" Runs?

Ive had a few runs in the past couple outtings that were very impressive,as far as how fast the fish was taking line. When you guys get a run that SCREAMS the reel for 10 seconds, let him stop before setting the hook? Or set it on the run? Im partial to letting them stop, but by that point your "snag factor" goes thru the roof.......opinions?

I love those dragsters! If your fishing a snaggy area, you better pop him. I prefer to let it go until it stops and again begins to move. If the fish is really peeling line, I'll just engage the reel and start reeling..no need to set the hook.

Engage the reel and hold on! smile.gif

I don't like to give 'em the onion when they are flying like that. What you end up with is a lot of force going difference directions when you set the hook and it really puts your line, knots, etc. to the test.

More often than not, those are channel cats.. but flatheads do tend to do it from time to time.

Those are by far the most difficult fish to hook for me. I have hit them immediately, waited for them to stop(one never did right hanson wink.gif), waited for them to stop then go again... all with about the same results... usually a missed fish.

If your getting a lot of that on an outing... turn the clicker off and tightline for them. If they hit and run and have the hook in the mouth, they will be hooked and leave you in a struggle to remove the rod from the holder vs just reeling in to replace a bait if flatheads are the culprit.

For those of us that mostly fish and rarely post, what's the "onion"?

The "onion" is a member of the vegetable family and adds taste and spice to many dishes. Some even eat them raw. smile.gif

Wrong onion. blush.gif

Ummmm... fellow FMer 'Kyle B' kept using the phrase "give em the onion" when we were fishing the other night when he was talking about setting the hook. Its worked its way into my vocabulary now.
