New Calcutta!! Need line/backing advice...

Recommended Posts

I just received a Calcutta 400B for Dad's day!! laugh.gif (I'm still wondering how my dog got to the store.... confused.gif )

I used primarily mono in the past but would like to switch to a super line in the 50# to 80# range on this reel. This reel will be mounted on my "if I only had one" muskie rod and will be called on for all my muskie needs.

What line would you recommend and with what type/amount of backing?

Thanks!!!

Hey Moose- Thats a sweet D-Day gift. For multi muskie purpose I would spool it at least 65 if not 80# power pro.For backer I just use whatever cheap mono 12-14# or so range. As far as how much backer I think that depends on spool capacity.

you want to try and get around 100 to 120 yards of braid. so back it to where the side spool wall is flat...in other words till the cone is no longer visible on the side wall. that should be just right. use the cheapest 12lb mono you can get, all the backing does is fill and prevent slipping. use an 80lb line...i like the tuff line plus or cortland master braid green

I would run 80 pound Masterbraid (bronze) or else Tuff Plus in 80 pound. You're going to have the most versatility with those. And as far as backing goes, we run 14 pound at Thorne Bros when spooling up all our reels, doesn't need to be anything fancy, just a cheap mono will suffice. For 80 pound line and when rigging a 400 Calcutta, I would put roughing 1/3 backing on, sometimes more depending on which band of 80 pound. Masterbraid and Tuff I would go 1/3. PowerPro and you can get closer to 1/2...
