S-cable(fl-8)on ice

Jig stick

Jig Stick

I've got a S-cable on my Vex - did it at the recommendation of Vexilar tech support.
They told me that water LT 40' deep is (to
them) shallow. The Vex simply puts out "to much" power for "shallow" water (their words).

I got to say it made a world of differance
on the Vex - I just leave it on all the
time now. Getting good signals on my lure,
the fish and bottom signals. Most the water
I fish is 30' or less.

As far as shooting thru the ice w/ the S cable - I've done it to check the depth of spots, but wasn't really looking for fish when doing it.

Jig Stick:

The problem I had w/ my Vex (a FL8 SLT)was that I couldn't turn down the "gain/squelch" far enough in order to get my bait/lure to show up as a green blip - EVERYTHING I was seeing was showing up as red. Didn't matter if it was a Swedish Pimple and a minnow, or an ice jig w/ a waxie - it was red.

Hence my call (actually email) to Vexilar tech support. After the S-cable - no more problems of that nature. The S-cable is "sheilded" or some such so that it cuts down the amount of power going to the transducer. I was skeptical at first, but seeing is believing. Its been on my Vex now for 2 years.

Now regarding fishing in 17ft of water on the ice, can you tell me how you don't get cold standing in all that water on top of the ice? smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

Hogeye:

A S-cable (stands for "Suppression") is a cable that Vexilar developed to suppress
some of the power the Vex is putting out. Its used for shallow water.

At the risk of raising the wrath of Rick or one of the other FM moderators, look here:
http://www.sona-graf.com/help/tips/tip012.html (This is a Vexilar web page which provides good detail on the S cable and what it does.)

Two years age I was on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis and all the crappies were holding in six to eight feet of water in the left over milfoil. You had to drop it through the milfiol and jig at the bottom to catch the little boogers. Until I used an S-cable the vexilar was completely worthless trying to see through the weeds. It vioded out the weeds and left the fish (GOOD DEAL!).

No more bugs, the FL-18's are a fantastic unit. Buy one if you can but I still would not recommend getting rid of your Fl-8 just to get an Fl-18.

Do you think that there are old units of the FL-18 in stock at stores that will still have bugs in them? How can you tell if it is new stock?

Thanks.

There are seveal FL-8's for sale and it is great that there are folks around like Jig Stick to buy up these units. That way the guy can get a little money out of his ole unit and upgrade to the FL-18. (And Jig Stick - the FL-18 is a whole different ballgame compared to the FL-8 and until you have used both, I would recommend you reserve your judgement)
