Another Battery Question??

sparcebag

Question

My battery is a few yrs. old, can I blast it with 50Amps charge to clean the plates??Also I've numerous times added distilled water to the cells,is this harming the acid percentage?? How can I tell if acid percentage is what it should be? can or should I add acid? The battery is taking charges but they dont last as long. Will anything prolong the life of this battery?

Go to any decent automotive store and pick up a hydrometer battery tester. They look much like antifreeze testers. The amount of little balls that float (some have pointers) tells the condition of the electrolyte through specific gravity. The lower the specific gravity, the lower the amp capacity of the battery or cell. You can also buy replacement acid for the battery at the auto store too.
