My old reliable 1990 40hp Johnson was hard to get into reverse & didn't want to stay there when trying to backtroll. Any ideas as to what would cause this ?

Easy solution would be adjusting cable adjustment and linkage.

Bad scenario would be a bad clutchdog in the gearcase.

Also check idle, sometimes if they are a little fast they tend to "stick".
