AS WE ALL KNOW THAT THE BASS OPENER IS THIS COMING WEEKEND,SOME OF US THAT HAVE FISHED 3 OR 4 TIMES ON GREEN FOR WALLEYE OR PIKE HAVE SOME NEWS FOR YOU.THE SMALL MOUTH BASS THAT DO TAKE A HOOK WHEN FISHING FOR OTHER SPECIES HAVE NOW OBTAINED THE MAGICAL 4 POUND TO 4 AND QUARTER POUND RANGE.

ALSO A VERY LARGE AMOUNT OF LARGEMOUTH BASS HAVE BEEN PRESENT[THEY LIVE IN CALHOUNAND REFUGE AREA AND HIT LAKE BEFORE RETURNING ABOUT A WEEK FROM NOW.

WHEN WE AFTER SUPPER WATCHED SEVERAL PEOPLE AT SPILLWAY CATCH PROBALY 75 LARGEMOUTH AND AS MANY SMALLIES.THE FISH SIZE IS WAY UP FROM LAST YEAR.

SPAWNING BEDS WE DROVE OVER WERE PRETTY EMPTY SO NEXT TWO WEEKS SHOULD BE GOOD,USED UNDERWATER CAMERA AND IN GREEN YOU CAN ALSO SEE DOWN TO 15 FEET EASILY,VERY CLEAN.

YES WE ATE THE STOCKED WALLEYE AND NO WE CAUGHT ZERO NORTHERN,WALLEYES 16 AND 15 INCHES IN ABUNDANCE AND THEY ARE GATHERED AT EDGES OF BASS SCHOOLS,OUTSIDE EDGES,ANCHOR AND EAT.CAUGHT A COUPLE OVER 3 POUNDS AND THRU THEM BACK.

BASS OPENER HERE SHOULD BE GREAT,CANT WAIT

riverrat316,the company this reopening has brought has been very good company.

So many small mouth and the size was really going down.

Its nice to see largemouth coming back.

10 years ago when the last bass tournament was held here before Bass study and shut down of serious fishing 85 percent of bass weighed in last tournament were [largemouth].

So they really didnt flourish with study ,and looks like they will be making a very quick recovery.

Walleye just doesnt take hold here and it is a great bass lake and could get better.

It is intended to be fished and being it sits out here where the lakes begin lets fish.

Other lakes around hereNorway,Andrew, etc. give an angler a real shot at 6 to 7 pound largemouth and we have plenty of room for boats.

Today not one boat on any lake here.

Its a trophy smally number lake but size really took a kick in but during study.

I agree with riverrat.

Lets keep this our little secret, huh!?!

This is about one of the only decent lakes in our area. Everyone in Kandiyohi county keeps everything they catch. I've seen stringers full of 6 inch sunnies and 10-12 inch walleyes. Catch and release efforts are greatly failing in this county. I've personally witnessed anglers catching smallies on Green that have been in the 4-5 pound range only to purposely throw them against the bottoms of their boats to kill them then "fling" them back into the water! They have it in their minds that if they kill off a world class smallmouth fishery the walleyes will magically bounce back.

If these anglers are after walleyes simply try another area lake. In fact since opener, my friend and myself, have boated two 10 pound plus walleyes out of a lake within 10 miles from Green.

You want to catch a lot of nice sized smallies try Green Lake. If you want to keep some nice sized smallies stay home.

...Sorry about the above, everyone is welcome. It just frustrates a bass angler like myself to see this happening.

I love smallmouth fishing and I am hoping to get my 9 year old son hooked on smallie fishing also. I have never fished Green L. but I was thinking of taking him there, instead of Mille lacs, this weekend.

I only have a 16' with a 25 horse, so I am limited to only a portion of the lake, especially if its windy.

Any suggestions as to what part of the lake we should try this time of the year. I read what Primetime wrote but it was hard to decipher some of it. I also have no clue where Calhoun and refuge area is. crazy.gif I think the forecast for Sunday is that the wind will be out of the NW. Is the NW part of the lake any good?

Thanks,

Nels

Yes, there is a good size to the smallmouth on Green Lake and there is a reason for it. BASS FISHERMEN UNDERSTAND CATCH AND RELEASE! If these (Contact Us Please)'s that fish walleye's would learn how to throw fish back they to might be able to enjoy great fishing. For anyone reading this that doesn't know much about Green lake, there is a ton of contraversy with walleye fisherman hating bass and doing whatever they can to try to get rid of them. What they don't understand is that they can try all they want to kill the bass in thinking that the walleye will come back, but if they don't throw there precious walleye back it doesn't reproduce! People can post all they want about great bass fishing anywhere and it doesn't hurt our fish. Like I stated "WE BASSFISHERMEN" know how to throw fish back. Now if you posted that walleye were big in size on a lake and lots of numbers, walleye guys would flock from miles around to load there boat full and take them home and then next year wine that there isn't any fish left in the lake and blame it on the bass.

Good point tritonman, bass anglers have seemed to figure catch and release out.

As for the Green Lake questions. Green Lake can become a big problem with wind if ya have a small boat. Ask my four year old son about opener weekend....he got a little sea-sick crazy.gif

there are numerous rock bars throughout Green. The good ones are on the north side of the lake. There is also a good one smack dab in the middle. Just look for the buoys. The Old Mill Inn resort can also be good. There is current coming through from Nest Lake right now. If they close off the spillway the fish will be gone. This area is located on the north western side of the lake. The Calhoun slough area is on the east side of Green. You can fish off the fishing bridge and catch nice bass and pike without a boat. It may be hard to access this area with a boat though as it gets pretty shallow. Right now live baits rigs are producing. Trying for walleye and cannot keep the smallies off. So far biggest caught this year is 19.5 inches.

If ya have any other questions let my know. I might be out there this weekend as well. May run into you. Good Luck!

Thanks Leech21,

I'll be in a green and cream colored Crestliner tiller with a gray Johnson. If you see me, please stop and say hi.

Otherwise I will let you know how we do, if we go.

Nels

P.S. People actually keep (kill) bass? mad.gif

Tried Green on Saturday. The smallies were shut down. The spillway is almost all the way closed. If we don't get any rain the fish will remain scattered for the rest of the year. Off shore rock bars and points will be the way to go mid-summer.

Hey fellas

I'll be heading out to Green on this Saturday for only my 2nd time in recent years. Anyone been out recently or have any pointers? I've heard it's been OK, but not spectacular by any means. Any tips or ideas on what to use or where to go would be greatly appreciated!

Fished it on Saturday Morning for our League tourney.

Pretty slow out there, caught the big fish of the day which was a 4lb 2oz Largemouth in about 6 inches of water on a Lucky Craft Sammy. Only weighed 3 out of 6 fish allowed, due to the fact we couldnt catch any others over the 12" mark. 1st place was 17lb even. Seen schools and schools of Smallies in 6-8 FOW that wouldnt bite anything. Sat over the top of them for an hour straight hitting them on the head with everything we had and nothing. It was a hot one out there with a ton of boat traffic.

Quote:

Was the 4.2 spawned out? How long was she?

Not quite, she was still pretty hefty, almost 20" give or take a little (I didnt measure it exactly, I just knew it was bigger than 12" lol) but the other two I had caught were around 16" and they were fat fat fat still.

You're right Leech21; the 18-19" class of smallies are fatter this season than last. My fishing partners and I commented on the same thing. I think last year's fish have gained at least an inch in length over the past year. Nice.
